The sweet aroma engulfed the small place as it seeped through the gaps of the the kitchen door.Heeseung took a sniff, inhaling the sweet scent of the soon-to-be-his dessert.Addicting, like a drug, the smell filled him whole, immediately calming his mind.
He became impatient as the sweet scent made him drool.Fingers tapping in the counter, eager for his treat to arrive.
Being so focused on the dessert,he had completely forgot about all the thoughts he had before. He found himself lost in the scent.
Moments later, she appeared, hands holding onto his long awaited dessert.Placing it onto the counter, his eyes immediately glued onto it.
"Here you go."
She placed the cutlery next to him.
The dessert of the day was a fruit tart. The fruit tart was medium sized with a generous amount of fruits, almost overflowing the crust.
Strawberries, grapes, blueberries to kiwi, all the different colours blended together, like a rainbow.A drizzle of honey coated the fruits, along with powdered sugar which gave it a snowy look.
The crust was the best part.Thick and baked to golden-brown,it was perfect. He hadn't tasted it but he knew that it would be immaculate.
The fruit tart looked too good to be eaten.
"Today's menu is the fruit tart.Enjoy."
He picked up the fork, trying to decipher where should he start from.
Even though he couldn't wait to taste it,he was afraid that it might crumble if he wasn't careful.
Truth be told, when the fork touched the edge of the crust, almost instantly, that part started to crumble.
By the time his fork had managed to cut through the crust,it was all in pieces instead of a whole.
"Aish."
He muttered under his breath,frustrated.
Broken pieces of the crust stuck onto the cream, along with a few fruits.Even though he was being so careful, the crust still crumbled.
He stared at his failed attempt to slice a piece, disappointed. The pretty tart looked all mushed up on his fork.
"Are you not gonna eat it?"
He was brought back to his senses by her sudden question.
Looking up,he realised that she was observing him.I mean he's the only customer and she probably wanted to see his reaction when he tried the tart.
She had plates on her hand, stacking them up on the rack before walking towards the counter.
Patting dry her wet hands on her apron, she smiled at Heeseung as he gave her an unreadable expression.
M.Sul
Her name tag wrote.
It twinkled, just like the menu, giving him the weird feeling again.
He broke from the trance, shaking his head.
"With just a slight nudge it crumbles."
She took another fork from the counter and touched the crust, causing it to crumble further.
He watched her in confusion, not understanding what she was trying to do.
"But we can't do anything about it.The tart was made like that, with a crumbly crust."
She probably saw the frustration he had,not being able to cut the tart perfectly, that's what he guessed.
"No matter how hard we try it'll still crumble eventually."
She showed him her fork, just like his.Putting it in her mouth, she tasted the tart.Heeseung still looking at her questionably.
"Hmmm.I baked it well this time."
Her eyes lit up,happy at the success.Heeseung raised a brow.Did she really took a bite of the dessert that was meant for a customer?Another deduction for poor customer service.
"Right,back to my point."
She placed the fork down, slightly embarrassed as he glared at her.
"Just like relationships."
Her next words caused him to stiffen.
"Sometimes,no matter how hard you try for it to work out,it won't.You'll keep denying but eventually it'll still crumble, like the tart."
He looked back down onto the plate. Her words hit him hard,as he related to it very well.
She watched him, sadness in his eyes.
"What do you do then?"
She asks him.
"What will you do to the tart now?"
He remained silent.
"Not eat it?Just because the crust isn't intact you would not eat it?"
His forked still had the piece he cut out from earlier, still yet to try the tart.
"The tart will still taste to the same. You can still eat it."
She answers her own question.
"Acceptance is the key.Don't be stuck just because the crust crumbled.Move on and continue,it might taste even better."
She tilted her head, signalling him to take a bit of the tart.
He found her words true. He'll move on from her and stop dwelling on the things that cannot be changed, for it'll only prevent him from tasting the tart.
Lifting the fork,he finally took a bite, tasting the tart.
The juicy fruits gave a tangy taste, sweet and sour which created a great balance with the honey. The filling inside so soft, cream so fluffy and airy.In contrast, the crust gave an excellent crunch to it.
Indulging in its sweetness, his shoulders rises and then dropped, like all the burden and worries gone, lips curved in satisfaction.
Never had he tasted such marvellous tart, maybe it was because he too decided to move on that made it tastier.
Lightness,he felt that he was on cloud 9,way better than any alcohol could do.
Soon, the tart had completely disappeared from the plate. He had finished his last bite.
Even after swallowing it,he could still taste it as his mouth was coated with all the goodness.
Looking at the girl,he gave a warm smile. She returned his smile, which made a soft laughter escape his lips.
His day has been sweetened and that gloomy face was replaced with a happy one.
