An uneasy feeling settled into Keri's stomach. She ran her clammy hands down her legs and smoothened her dress. Nibbling on her lip, she looked to her right.
"I'm scared," her voice was almost a whisper. "What if they don't take it well? What if they suddenly hate me?"
Cam laughed and softly grabbed her hand. With his other hand, his fingers brushed her hair behind her ear.
"You're overreacting for no reason. My parents love you. Especially my mom."
"Yeah, but I see this all of the time. The mom starts off loving the girl and once she finds out the girl is dating her son, boom, the girl becomes Satan. She's suddenly not good enough for her son."
He placed his hands on her shoulders and looked in between her eyes. "Even if she does think that, it won't stop me from seeing you. I'm dating you. She isn't. Okay?"
Keri nodded her head. "I just wish my parents were here, too."
"We'll tell them another time," he assured. He pressed his lips onto hers for a moment before slipping her hand into his.
In that moment, Keri felt like everything was going to be okay. And even if it wasn't, it didn't matter because she knew that Cam was there for her no matter what.
They had finally worked through everything and became best friends again. To Keri's surprise, she didn't lose her title of the most popular girl in school and Rebecca actually thought her and Cam were cute together.
Together, Cam and Keri walked inside the restaurant and towards their table. The Walker's were already there, chatting and eating breadsticks.
"Hi!" Mrs. Walker beamed as she noticed her son and Keri.
They both responded with a "hi" as well. After taking a seat, Cam and Keri exchanged a glance.
This was it.
"So, um, Keri and I have some news for everyone," Cam cleared his throat. He reached for Keri's hand above the table and looked directly at both of his parents.
Swallowing, Keri's eyes slowly made their way around the table. Jack was coloring on his placemat. Mason was smirking as if he knew what was coming. And Mr. and Mrs. Walker were staring at Cam with wide eyes.
"We're...dating. Keri is my girlfriend."
Butterflies fluttered in Keri's stomach. Her heart thudded like a stampede was approaching. And her skin felt prickly as if there were bugs crawling on her. Her grip around Cam's hand became tighter.
Mrs. Walker clasped her hands around her mouth. "That's wonderful!" She gasped. Keri's body had relaxed as a relieved smile appeared on her face. "I knew this day would come."
"I'm happy for the two of you," Mr. Walker grinned.
"So, when's the wedding?" Mason smirked from across the table.
Keri's head snapped towards him as a distinguished blush appeared on her face.
"Ooo, you're getting married?" Jack chimed in.
A small smile appeared on Cam's face as he turned towards Keri. Neither of them wanted to admit it, but it had crossed their minds several times, even if they were just teenagers who started dating.
