I has this theory for ages now but I never had the chance to say it so here it goes.
We all know that Byron had an affair With Meredith, he loved her and the Liars made the relationship not work, for example Alison made Aria vandalise Byron's office or because of Alison, Aria saw them kissing. Apparently it was the end of something not the beginning, it didn't seem like a good bye kiss to me. Because the girls saw him which then forced him to break up with Meredith, then he saw the -A message Mona sent to Ella about the affair. Is it possible that he wanted to have the same power over people as -A did? Maybe he saw how -A could just send letters and messages without people knowing it was him and figured that he wants that too. After he found out about Mona being -A he made another -A team and that's what he does.
There are some evidence about him being -A so I will post them later. This is just a through on why he might want to be -A.
