“You think you can find that book for me?” He gave a playful pouty face

“You think you can find that book for me?” He gave a playful pouty face. “Please~?”

With a chuckle you went and scouted for his desired book, pointing at it so he could retrieve it himself. It was a children’s book, typical.

“Why are you still reading books for 2nd graders? Aren’t you a little too old for that, Mikey?”

Sano shook his head, wiping the dust off of it. He began to lazily flip through the torn and worn out pages. More dust flew into his face. You laughed at the sight, the sound echoing around the area and heavenly to his ears.

“I still order stuff off the kid’s menus,”

“I see,” your eyes flickered over the flags and toys that were mounded on the floor. All were untouched, contrasting their environment.

Sano seated himself at a table, careful to not give himself splinters. His eyes rose to look at-- through you. The outfit he bought you looked just the same since the day he gave it to you. His fingers tingle with a desire to touch you, one last time.

You seated yourself across from him, smiled oh so small and looked at him too. Eyes swirling with hurt and regret, longing for something physically impossible.

“Read to me?” Your voice sounded so broken, it made him ache. Still he obliged, flipping back to page one. Voice smooth as he began to read the words aloud.

“Up. Pup. Pup is up. Pup. Cup. Pup in cup.”

This was the only time you really felt peace. Instead of dreading every second of this cruel world.

“Pup. Cup. Cup on pup.”

All the while some invisible force is begging you to come down. Offering all the relief you need.

“All. Ball. We all play ball. Ball. Wall. Up on a wall.”

Sometimes you want to let go. Wanted to end all ties to this world and end all of your pain, but you can’t.

“All. Fall. Fall off the wall.”

You had to stay for him. Sano Manjiro. Other than Draken, you were all he had left really.

“See. Bee. We see a bee. See. Bee. Three. Now we see three.”

But you need to put yourself first. Today is your last day.

Sano hopped over bookcase after bookcase, tables, and chairs until he reached your usual meet-up spot

Sano hopped over bookcase after bookcase, tables, and chairs until he reached your usual meet-up spot. Another toy fell atop the pile on the floor, rolling down and falling on the dusty floor. “Reader?”

No response. He shrugged and began to view the books on the remaining bookshelves -- which weren’t a lot. Reminiscing about the times you goofed around in here. Getting dropped off and picked up by Shinichiro, spending hours on end attempting to read big kid books and giggling at inappropriate words.

He pulled out yet another children’s book, this time it wasn’t worn or torn. And all the pages were intact. But you weren’t at the table, or the reception desk, nor were you lingering around your dried puddle of blood.

It’s been hours and he’s still waiting for you. Sano Manjiro isn’t dumb he knows damn well where you are. You’ve left the world entirely. He knew you only stayed because of him and his inability to let go. But it still hurts.

For the remainder of the day he sits alone, crying. Killing the bastard who killed you and destroying this library isn’t enough to rid him of this feeling, it seems.
