Chapter 4

The Great Hambino

The Sandlot
——————————————
June 23, 1962

Kids yelling could be heard all the way to Vincent's drug store, and boy is that a long way away

"Hamilton the Babe Porter" Ham practices some swings, tapping home plate with the bat

"Long ball Porter" He told himself out loud "Come on Denunez"

Ham then proceeded to point his finger over the green metal fence impersonating Babe Ruth's signature pose

The whole sandlot was filled with laughter from the kids other than Scotty who had no idea who the Babe was

"Yea, ok ok, let's see it" Benny punched his glove as he was in the catchers position, eager to start the game

Kenny pitched the first ball becoming a strike

"Woah" Benny stood up teasing Ham with a smirk on his face holding the ball out

"Come on, is that all you got?" Ham
rolled as the kids around the lot laughed and made comments about the strike

"Give him a tennis racket, then maybe he'd hit it!" Squints yelled as the kids around him filled with laughter other than Ham
Even Benny cracked a chuckle

"I bet ya he won't even hit a basketball" Someone else yelled

"Alright Ham this is my heater, I dare you to hit it!" Kenny challenged getting in his pitching stance

Ham nodded his head sending a single he's ready
Kenny pitched the ball

It all seemed to be happening in slo-mo as Ham hit the ball
Then it all went back to normal

Ham had hit the ball over the fence leading to all the sandlot kids to be angry at him except, Scott Smalls

"Great going Hambino" Ada called out just as angry as the others before throwing her book at his back as he ran the bases

He seemed to be happy for getting all the praise

Ada and Benny stood next to each other at home plate waiting for Ham to steal it home

Continuing to watch Ham get hit with gloves, Scotty made his way to the fence reassuring he'll get the ball back
"Hey don't worry, uh, I'll get it!"

Scotty then began to cling the tall fence without slipping
Just as he got to the top he heard more yelling

"No!" Squints yelled catching the attention of the rest of the kids
They each turned their head to see Squints making a run for the boy on the fence

They all began running and screaming for Scotty to stop

Soon enough, the rest of the non sandlot kids were tearing him down from the fence

"Hey, hey! What was that for?" Scotty asked as the rest of the kids tried to catch their breath

"You can't go over there Smalls" Timmy told him as Tommy repeated

"Why not?" Scott asked

The sandlot kids kept telling him trying to talk over the other

Soon Benny stepped in front of everyone putting a hand on Scott's shoulder
"Smalls, go over to that whole and look through it" Benny pointed over to the small hole at the bottom of the fence

"What? No-"
Scotty protested but Benny interrupted him "it's fine, just go look in that hole over there, ok? Go" he persuaded

Scotty gulped before nodding then making his way over to the open hole very slowly

Ada held onto Bennys arm and laid her head on his shoulder as he comforted her with a kiss on the forehead, making Scotty a bit more nervous than before

He's never seen Ada so scared or nervous, she's always confident and standing up for others or telling them off

He didn't think she would be scared of a tall green fence

When Scott made it to the fence he bent down and looked through the hole

After around a minute or two a huge paw came out of nowhere scaring the Smalls boy

Scotty jumped from the fence running his fastest back to the group trying to catch his breath with a feared expression on his face

"Wha- what was that?" He asked looking at everyone

They all looked at each other before saying in syncs

"Camp out"

The ten kids made they're way into the cul-de-sac going off one by one to get ready for a night at the treehouse as they called it a camp out

As Ada explained to Scotty what the camp out was, all benny could do was admire the girl he called his best friend

That thought out a frown on his face, he wanted to be more than best friends with her

"Benny, you alright?" He looked down to see Ada looking concerned he nodded and kept walking

The night before when Benny was comforting Ada, the two grew more closer if they already could

When the two dropped off Scotty they made they're way to the Lawrence's porch

"Hey Benny?" Ada turned to him after she opened her front door with the key from under the mat
"Hm?" He responded

Ada smiled "It was very nice of you to invite Scott, even though it was mostly my idea" The brunette giggled at the end as Benny rolled his eyes

"Ok whatever" Bent started walking down the porch to his own house

"Bye Ada!" He yelled out

"Goodnight!" She yelled back before walking into her house just in time for dinner

Have a great day/afternoon/night!
