March turned into April and April turned into May. By the end of May, Kei wasn't the only one with a shiny badge on their chest, except they were the only one to be happy about it. At the end of May, Headmaster Umbridge instated another Decree and created her own little elite group called the Inquisitorial Squad. To Kei's humour and Tiberius' dismay, the Slytherin had been recruited into the little club. Tiberius hated every part of it but had no say being that Umbridge wanted "a respectable leader" to help keep the younger students of the squad in check.
Umbridge got the "Head Boy" she wanted.
"Look at you, finally detached yourself from Vic," Kei teased as Tiberius stomped into the library.
"And I'm surprised you finally detached yourself from his sister's lips," he bit back, discarding his bag on the floor and sitting in the chair across from them.
"I do not—"
"Anyways," Tiberius cut her off, "heard anything important?"
"I should be asking you that, lapdog," Kei raised a brow at him.
"Something about fixing the school, yada-yada," he dismissed. "I'm so happy we graduate in a month."
Kei nodded in agreement, ending the conversation at that. NEWTs were in three weeks and the pair were throwing themselves in studying but between Tiberius's Inquisitorial Squad duties and Kei's Head Girl role, they both had more on their plate than they could possibly handle. The year wasn't turning out the way Kei had planned, but they weren't entirely upset about it.
In a turn of different events, Tiberius and Vic were finally officially together— they had been for a few months— and Kei was with Gina. The two best friends got their happy ending, their silver lining in the dictatorial rule of the Ministry Infiltrator.
"You think it'll be good?" Kei suddenly asked Tiberius.
He hummed, looking up from his book, "what do you mean?"
"After graduating," she said, thinking back to the happy memories of the last seven years at Hogwarts, "with Vic and Gina. I'm. . . kind of scared."
Tiberius sighed, "I think it'll be good. Not the best, with all of the Death Eater stuff, but we'll be happy."
"I hope so," they nodded. "As long as we have each other, we'll be okay."
"And we'll always have each other so there's no need to worry," Tiberius smiled at his best friend.
The weekend after Kei's birthday, the Hufflepuff was finally allowed to take their Apparation test— they passed! Tiberius had passed back in April when all of the seventeen-year-olds took their test in Hogsmeade, but being that Kei wasn't turning seventeen until June, she had to wait. And that following Monday, Gina stole her away, taking her on a little impromptu date.
"Gingee, you could have just put a blindfold over my eyes," Kei laughed. "You're squishing my nose!"
Gina grumbled, trying to walk up the steps while putting her hands over Kei's eyes in order to keep the destination a secret.
"This is harder than you think," she groaned.
"Hence why I said you should've used a— Ouch," Kei shrieked, stumbling over their own feet and falling up the stairs, as Gina fell with them. "Georgina!"
"Okay, we're going to the corridor between the Astronomy and Ravenclaw towers," Gina deadpanned, tired of how much effort romance was.
Kei laughed and rubbed her elbow as Gina helped her up. Hand in hand, the pair walked over to the corridor. On the bench near the large floor to ceiling window, there was a basket. Just from the smell, Kei knew there were all kinds of pastries in there and, most importantly, chocolate chip cookies.
