Athy sat outside in the sunshine, drinking tea with Jeanette.

"So how was the date yesterday with Lucas," she asked, blue eyes sparkling. Athy laughed.

"It was really fun. He can be annoying, but he's a good person to be around." Jeanette sipped her tea thoughtfully.

"That's good; you should never be stuck in a toxic relationship. So where did you two go that was so fun?" Athy smiled at the memory.

"We went to the town fair together. They always have those fairs at night, with fireworks and food stalls."

"Lucky...maybe next time I can third wheel along. I've never been to a fair before." Athy sat up straighter.

"Wait, you haven't?"

Jeanette shook her head.

"Duke Alpheus never lets me go there without someone trailing behind me."

"Oh, my god. You definitely have to come with me next time they hold one!"

"Really? You're too nice, Athy. Lucas is lucky to have you." Athy bit into a chocolate cookie.

"Thanks, Jeanette. I honestly never knew Lucas would like me back."

Jeanette grinned.

"Same. I mean, who knew such a small bet would turn into this? He even got your father to approve of him."

Both of the girls smiled in memory of the very overprotective father Athanasia had.

-----------------

Athy returned from the meeting with Jeanette, getting ready to finish some paper work. Her cousin, though naïve, was a really sweet person to talk to. Replaying their conversation in her head, she came to a sudden stop. What had Jeanette said before their conversation about her and Lucas's relationship had ended?

who knew such a small bet would turn into this?

She froze. What bet? Was there something going on between Lucas, Ijekiel and Jeanette she wasn't aware of? Quickening her pace, she headed down to the library, where Ijekiel probably was. Seeing the white haired boy, she hurried up to him.

"Ijekiel," Athy said, "I need to ask you something."

Said boy widened his golden orbed eyes in surprise.

"Of course, my lady."

"While talking with Jeanette today about Lucas, she mentioned a bet. Do you know anything about it?"

Ijekiel shuffled awkwardly, obviously knowing the answer but not willing to tell his companion. Seeing this, Athy told him, "I'm not angry. I just want to know. Lucas is my boyfriend and if it is something to do with our relationship, I have a right to know." It was in these times, Ijekiel thought, that you could see how Athy was the daughter of Claude, blue eyes cold and hard.

"Uh, well, it all started when me, Jeanette and Lucas went out to a bar while you were away. Lucas got kinda drunk, and someone near our table overheard us and learnt that we were close to you.

Athy raised her eyebrows. She could tell what was going to happen next.

"He gave me and Lucas a bet of one thousand dollars if we could get with you by the end of the month.

Ijekiel inhaled sharply.

"Lucas accepted, while I didn't. That's why he asked you out a few weeks ago. For the bet." At this, Ijekiel stopped, aware of what he had done. Athanasia struggled to hold back her tears.

"Does that mean every time he said he loved me, he didn't mean it? So it was all just a lie?"

Ijekiel looked taken aback.

"No; my lady, people can develop feelings over time. I truly believe that Lucas does love you."

"He didn't when he confessed to me. That's what matters. To think he would just- just think of me as something to be used-"

Ijekiel stopped her.

"He wasn't in the right mind, Athanasia. He was drunk, and people do stupid things when they're drunk. I'm sure that if he was sober, he wouldn't have accepted."

A small tear left Athy's left eye.

"I am- so sorry-, Athy. I wish I could have done more to stop him."

"Don't be. You did the best you could. Where is he now?"

Ijekiel blinked.

"He and I aren't on the best terms. I don't know."

Athy turned away, brushing a hand over her eyes.

"Ok. Thanks, Kiel."

----------------

Lucas was walking down the long halls of the palace when he heard hurried footsteps behind him. It was obviously Athy's, but they were louder, unusual from the soft steps she usually took. Bracing himself, he turned to look at her. Her blue orbs were deeper than ever, and he could see the telltale signs of crying through the puffy, swollen eyes she had. His face creased in concern.

"Athy? Have you been crying?"

A loud slap resounded against the stone walls.

"You fucking bastard," she hissed. Lucas coughed, doubling over.

"Wh-what do you mean?"

"Don't act like you don't know!" Athy walked over to him and glared.

"You placed a bet of one thousand on me!"

Lucas's eyes widened. How did she know? Scrambling to his feet, he rushed to explain.

 "Athanasia- I can explain-"

"No. Ijekiel told me everything. Well, Jeanette subconsciously told me over tea this morning."

Lucas mentally swore.

"How can you treat me like some prize to be bought? Am I just an animal to be bet on?"

Shit. This was the emperor's daughter he was talking to.

"I was drunk!"

"So? A drunken mind speaks a sober heart! YOU DIDN'T TRANSFORM INTO SOMEONE ELSE WHEN YOU DRANK; YOU WERE STILL LUCAS, AND YOU STILL DECIDED TO TRICK ME!"

All the maids who had the luck to be witnessing this scene quickly grabbed some tea and looked on from afar. Athy's voice rose to a shout, overcome with betrayal.

"I thought it was a prank! I could spare one thousand dollars, and I planned to laugh along when you rejected me!"

"BUT I DIDN'T! IS THAT WHY YOU LOOKED SO SHOCKED?"

Lucas ran his fingers through his hair. He couldn't imagine his life without Athy, his Athy.

"Look, Athy, I may not have loved you before, but I really do. I really do. I- I can't- no, I won't- lose you."

"Too bad," she screamed. "Cause you lost me the second you saw me as a bet."

Tears trickled down her face, making her look more angelic and pitiful.

"And don't call me Athy. Only friends that I trust call me that." She took a shuddering breath.

"Screw you, Lucas. You might be the magician of the black tower, and for that, I won't tell my father. But I hope I'll never have to see you again in my life."

Each word she said was like a knife to Lucas's heart, cutting him open and letting him bleed. Athanasia delivered one final blow.

"It would never have worked out anyways. An immortal mage and a mortal princess. We would have had to end it sooner or later. I'm sorry it had to come to this."

Lucas watched his princess leave, out of the hallway and out of his life- possibly forever.
