Athanasia de Alger Obelia had learnt, at a very young age, that although young children were taught to play fair and nice, reality was far from it. In fact, even fate had it's favourites.

And I'm not one of them, she thought, mindlessly fingering a jade stone pendant her cousin, Jeneatte, had given her on her twelfth birthday. From the tender age of five, she had already learnt that she wouldn't live as long as the people around her. But now, at sixteen, the whole concept of it had hit her unexpectedly in the face. She'd never graduate from the university of her dreams, never get to travel the world, never attend a wedding of her own. From the fateful afternoon her crestfallen family had returned from the doctor, Athanasia's life was just a collection of white, antiseptic rooms, beeping machines and concerned faces, a general blur of white, grey and black. That is, until a certain somebody arrived at her school.

--------------

"Everyone, meet Lucas. He'll be joining this class from today. Please be nice and welcoming to him."

Athy continued to fiddle with her necklace, not bothering to lift up her head. Jeanette shook her arm, and whisper- shouted. "Hey, Athy, he actually kinda looks good."

Scowling, she finally looked up, and met his ruby red eyes. A stray strand of ebony black hair covered one of them, and a corner of his mouth twitched upwards as he looked at her. Athy rolled her eyes and looked back down. To her, it was just another bland day at school.

At lunch, she pulled out her phone to check her messages, relieved to see that the only text she had gotten was from Lillien asking about a meet up on the weekend. As a child, she had grown accustomed to weekly hospital check ups to see if her internal organs were working, with people prodding her everywhere. Jeanette tapped her shoulder, and leaned over.

"Hey, Lucas is heading over."

"And?"

"I think you two would be good friends."

Athy blinked.

"No, Jeanette, I don't need another friend to mourn my death later."

Jeanette looked taken aback. "Athy, don't say that!"

"Whatever."

Jeanette continued to berate her friend until Lucas came and sat down.

"Can I sit here?"

While Jeanette enthusiastically nodded and shuffled over to make space for Lucas, Athy merely bit into her sandwich and looked up, her blonde hair flying in the wind. Though it was a beautiful spring day with the sun was shining down onto the ground and soft pink petals floating through the air, Athy felt empty inside, like there was no colour in the world.

---------------

"What's wrong with you?"

Athy glanced sideways at Lucas, startled.

"Excuse me?"

Lucas shrugged, still waiting for an answer.

"That's so incredibly rude!"

"And? Most people have more friends and are happier than you. And most girls fall for me the second they see me. Something is obviously off with you."

Athanasia scowled at his rude but true statement.

"Fine, I'll tell you. What fun is there in living if you know you're going to die one day?"

Lucas threw back his head and laughed.

"Hah. So you're one of those goth kids who don't believe in love."

"I'm not saying that. I've just never been able to allow myself to love someone."

The other person smiled and, closing the book he was reading, took Athy's hands in his. Its cold, he thought. So much colder than his own warm ones.

"Ok, then I'll be your first love."

Athy flinched and almost instantly drew back her hands.

"When did I give you permission to come in physical contact with me? And that line was absolute cringe! Besides, how can you say that so casually?"

He smiled and stood up.

"Because if you're only going to live once, you better make it count with no regrets."

---------------

As Athanasia then came to the conclusion that there was a loose screw in the new student, she spent the rest of that afternoon avoiding him. But it didn't help that he seemed to see through her plans and used Jeanette to get close to her. So when the bell rang, Athy felt extremely relieved and ran out of the classroom at the speed of light (much to the surprise of a concerned Jeanette).

Speeding down the hallway, Athy took out her phone and called the poor man who was responsible for both herself and her father.

"Hello? Miss?"

"Felixxxxx can you tell the car to come ASAP?"

"Miss, are you running? You know that's bad for your health right? I've informed the chauffeur but is there any specific reason why you want to leave early today? You usually stay behind with Miss Jeanette."

"Yeah yeah I know-"

Athy smiled softly as she walked down the steps to where she was usually picked up.

"Seriously? You're sixteen and you still have to be driven around like a child?"

Jeanette, who was sitting beside her cousin, frowned, the ends of her mouth tugging downwards. As she opened her mouth to protest, Athy shook her head slowly, telling her that she could handle this.

"Well there's no other option when you have cystic fibrosis and very overprotective parents."

Lucas's eyes widened.

"[] I didn't mean it like-"

Athy interrupted him.

"I know. You didn't realise. It's ok."

The other student still seemed to be in shock.

"If there's anything I could do to make it up to you-

Oh, I'll take you out for breakfast on the weekend, if you want!"

Athy could see where this was going and hastily declined but before she could, Jeanette jumped in and agreed, saying, "Yeah you should, since you were so rude, Lucas!"

And that was how Athanasia found herself struggling to find a suitable outfit on a Saturday morning.
