"Lucas! Wake up!"

"Ok! I'm coming!"

As the man trudged down the stairs, he was aware of the smell of toast and herbal tea coming from the kitchen.

"I got a text from my friend; there's a new girl coming to our college today."

"What?"

Lucas snorted and poured himself a cup of water.

"What type of person would enroll themselves into a new school in the middle of the year?"

"Still, what if she's pretty?"

His friend came in front of him and wiggled his eyebrows, smiling jokingly.

"Ugh, stop-"

Deep down, the immortal wizard knew that there would be no one after her.

---------------

"Hi! My name's Athanasia."

Lucas's head jerked up as a soft voice floated towards him from the front of the classroom. He hadn't been focusing on what the teacher had been saying, but the sound of such a familiar name had drawn his attention.

"Aside from homeroom, you're also in Lucas's core class, so take a seat next to him and he'll show you around," the teacher said, smiling to herself. (she ships it y'all!!)

As Athanasia slid into the chair next to him and placed her bag on the table, Lucas's stomach suddenly seemed to cave into itself. He had a moment of deja vu, with the way that she moved and played with her hair.

Could it be-?

She had the same name, same voice and same characteristics- but this time, her sapphire eyes were lighter, less pronounced.

"Hi."

"Hi."

Both of them looked awkwardly at each other, Lucas's heart skipping a beat when she broke out into a quiet laugh. It couldn't be. The mage had lived a thousand lifetimes ever since the end of the Obelian Empire, always trying to find the golden haired princess again in each lifetime. The last time she had appeared to him was last century, five lives back. He had been a noble's son and she a handmaid, working in the manor; they had been inseparable since the day he showed her around the house and later taught her to read and write. When he'd left for a business trip with his father, they had snuck onto the rooftop on the very last night, and Alice, the name she had received in that life, had stolen a bottle of champagne. They curled up in his room afterwards, and in the darkness of the night exchanged promises to see each other again.

"When will I see you again?"

"When I come back. It'll only be a few months, I promise. Just a bit after your 25th birthday."

"Okay."

But a few weeks before he was due to come back, a letter of notice had come through the mail, saying that one of their servants, a particular tall, fair-haired one, had slipped and drowned near the harbor while on an errand. Lucas had cursed himself for not teaching her how to swim.
