Meg's POV
*At the Apartment*
Mia comes running into my room at 6am yelling, "Happy Birthday bestie!!" to me. I half awake reply, "Thank you so much girlie! I love you." I sit up and gather my surroundings as it is 6 in the morning and I hate the mornings. I ask, "What time is it?" Mia answers, "6 am. I have lift in an hour and you have the week off from Team USA, so I figured you could pop in for a visit. Do you want to come with me to the Forum?"
I take in her response before giving her my signature what the fuck look and saying, "Fine but I better get coffee. It's too early for this."
Mia says, "Girlie we gotta go in 20 minutes. So get your ass up." I groan at her response and drag myself out of bed. I throw my contacts in and get my team gear on and some shoes and we head to the Forum.
Mia's driving and pulls into Dunks and gets our usual. I take out money to pay but before I get the chance she says, "No way in hell am I making the birthday girl pay for her coffee. Put that money away." I protest but I get cut off by her, "Don't even try it. You're my best friend and today is your 22nd. Damn fucking straight I'm going to spoil the hell out of you." "Fine," I mumble.
*At the Forum*
We are walking into the Forum for our lift and when we get inside we notice that no one is to be found. "Are we early," I hear Mia say behind me. "I don't think so, it's 6:45 so everyone should be here by now."
"Happy Birthday," I hear as the entire team and coaching staff yells jumping out from behind the door. They pop confetti at me and yell simultaneously that the love me. I feel the blush creep onto my face as I become the center of attention.
"Thank you guys so much. This means the world to me. You guys are some of the most important people in my life and I love you all so much," I say after everyone calms down.
"There's one more thing. Stay here," Mia tells me as she walks into the locker room. I stand there waiting for her to return. She comes back and hands an envelope to our coach. "Coach I think you should do the honors," she says to our coach.
"Of course," I hear Coach respond.
She hands me the envelope and says, "This is for you. Read the letter that's inside first. It should be a separate piece of paper." I pull out the piece of paper that means and read it out loud to the whole team.
"Dear Ms. Hansbury, it has come to our attention that your 22nd birthday is the night of our home-opener at Fenway against the Milwaukee Brewers. We at the Red Sox have been following you since your college debut back in 2017. We are huge fans and are always talking about you in the clubhouse. You are having an amazing career and are the best college softball hitter in history. We also offer our congratulations on making the 2020 Olympic team" I pause to take a breath and gather my thoughts as my mind is going crazy right now.
"Our sources tell us that you are a die hard Red Sox fan. As a thank you for all the unconditional support over the years and a gift for your birthday we are giving you 2 tickets to the home-opener on April 7 as well as on field passes to batting practice before the game. After talks with our coaching staff and the players on the team, we are also inviting you to take batting practice with the team. We hope to see you and wish you a Happy Birthday. Sincerely, Alex Cora and the Boston Red Sox." My eyes start watering and "No fucking way," is all I manage to get out as I'm crying the happiest tears of my life.
