I ran into the house to yell out the good news to my parents that I have a date for prom. My father came down the steps hollering at me, asking why I was yelling. My brothers came upstairs from the basement to see what was going on. My mother came down from her bedroom to see what was going on as well. I stood in the center of the room as my whole family surrounded me, looking at me like I was a madwoman. I smiled, and I told them that I got a date to prom.
"You made us come down here thinking you were in trouble over a boy?" My dad asked.
"Come on, now, Ashera, you're obnoxious," declared my mom.
"I'm just excited," I replied to my mother and father.
"Who are you supposed to be going to prom with?" said my brother, Darwin.
"Ty," I said. "Ty? Are you talking about Tylor Davidson?" Spencer asked.
"Yes," I said nervously.
"Girl, we told you to leave him alone," yelled Darwin.
I didn't say anything else. I quickly ran up the stairs to hop on a FaceTime call with my friends. I was able to get Erin and Kris on the phone, but Savannah didn't answer. I was so ecstatic about my date to prom over the phone, and so were my friends.
"I'm so happy for you; we need to find you a dress," said Erin.
"I know this excellent store that sells a whole bunch of dresses. It's about an hour's drive from here; we can head over there next weekend if you'd like," said Kris.
"Yeah, that will be nice. We should head up there, Ash. I can drive if you guys want," said Erin.
"Yeah, I mean, I would drive, but I don't have a car yet," said Kris.
I sat there listening to Erin and Kris as they both went back and forth, conversing about ideas for prom.
"Ash, are you there?" asked Kris.
"Yeah, I am here, I am just listening,"
"We need to get Van on the call so we can run the plan by her," Erin said.
"I tried adding her to the call, but she didn't answer," I replied.
"Oh, okay, will you see Tylor tomorrow at school?" asked Erin.
"Yes, I should. I cannot wait," I said.
"I'm happy to hear that; I'm going to hop off here, but I can't wait to go shopping with you girls," said Erin.
Then, Erin hung up, and Kris hung up as well after a great chat. Shortly after, I received a text from Tylor asking me to meet him in the lobby at 7:00 AM Monday. Nervously, I texted him back and said, "okay."
The Next Morning
I arrived at the school around 6:45 and headed to the lobby where Tylor asked me to meet him. I know I got some time to burn, so I just started to play on my phone, sitting on my bookbag right by the auditorium doors. Anxiety begins to knock on the doors of my mind, and I couldn't help but think negatively about this. I wondered if he had changed his mind about prom or maybe he doesn't want to talk anymore; I don't know. As more and more students began to come in, I didn't see Tylor anymore. I checked my phone for the time, and it was already four minutes past 7:00. I'm looking for him just as nervous as I could be. I really like this boy, so I'm hoping he hasn't changed his mind about prom. After another five minutes, I saw Tylor coming in along with Erin. Erin noticed that Tylor was beside her, so she looked at me, grinned, and walked off to her first period class. I stood there gazing upon Ty as he walked towards me. I did my makeup and wore cute clothes on purpose to look more attractive. He stopped and looked at me for a second.
"Hey," he said.
"Hello," I replied.
"So, I wanted to meet you this early because I didn't know if I would be able to get this off my chest to you in the second period," Tylor said.
"What is it?" I asked restlessly.
"I came down to the conclusion that I think I want to be more than friends," said Tylor.
"More than friends?" I asked with confusion.
"Yes, Ashera. I think I like you. Would you want to be my girlfriend?" asked Tylor.
My heart dropped; I just couldn't believe it. I was so happy to hear that.
"Yes, Ty! Yes!" I said loudly.
"Great, we'll talk later. If we aren't working together today in class, then I'll text you tonight," Tylor said.
"Okay, babe," I said.
I thought that I might have called him babe too soon, but he smiled at me and proceeded to head to class. I was nervous about what he would say all last night and parts of this morning. However, it doesn't matter anymore. I have a new boyfriend, in fact, my first boyfriend in years, and he's my date to prom. I couldn't help but think about how foolish I was to panic. It all worked out in my favor.
