Despite how cliche it might sound, Lukas felt fireworks going off in his heart, felt butterflies fluttering nervously through his entire being. He cupped Matthias' face, brought him closer, and deepened the kiss. He could feel warm, wet tears running down his cheeks, but he wasn't sure if they were his or Matthias'--maybe both.
He couldn't shake the feeling that this kiss had been a long time coming; Matthias must have been planning this. Not that he minded.
When Matthias pulled back from him, Lukas just wanted to tug him close again and kiss him till the sun came up. "I love you too, Matthias. I always have."
"I made my way to your sweet center, didn't I?"
"You're the only one who gets a taste."
"Oh, Lukas!"
Another kiss, another explosion in his heart. Everywhere Matthias touched, Lukas felt like he was burning, but in the best way possible. He felt himself melting--his heart, soul, entire being--into a puddle of goo at Matthias' feet.
"How did you figure it out?" Lukas murmured, his face just inches away from Matthias'. Oh, how tempting it was to steal another kiss.
"I don't know, Lukas," Matthias replied, and his accent was so thick at that moment. "I feel like maybe I always loved you. Everything you've done--well, almost everything...I just can't get enough of you and I don't want to."
Lukas shivered at those words, feeling goosebumps spreading across his arms; how could someone feel both hot and cold at the same time, he wondered? Then again, love was a mystery, right? It did crazy things. It drove people crazy.
"I'm sorry for not saying anything before," Lukas murmured, and he felt the tickle of Matthias' breath on his cheek as he leaned in to kiss it.
"Oh, you didn't have to say anything, Lukas. You were so painfully obvious. I just wanted to fuck around with you a little bit, pretend I was clueless."
"That was torture, Mat." Matthias just nuzzled his neck and closed his eyes, not wanting to continue that conversation--and Lukas didn't blame him. "Were you planning this?"
"I planned the location and food--not the timing. I didn't mean to get so lost, we were supposed to be here earlier," Matthias explained, sheepishly giggling and burying his face further into Lukas' neck. "I guess the universe was on our side today, fireflies and all."
Right then, one of the fireflies separated from its pack and landed on Lukas' nose, blinking at him as if to punctuate Matthias' statement. Matthias, not having heard a response, glanced up at Lukas and immediately broke down laughing again at the sight of Lukas and the firefly staring each other down. Lukas couldn't help but chuckle softly, lifting a hand and waving the firefly away. It blinked at him again, before flitting back off into the twilight, and Lukas sighed out, watching after it.
He only looked away when Matthias practically tackled him into a hug, pressing little butterfly kisses all over his neck and bringing forth more laughter and more blushing on Lukas' part--maybe on Matthias' part too, but it wasn't like Lukas could really see it. He felt so warm, like his heart was about to burn white-hot through his chest, and yet he somehow didn't care. He didn't care about anything but Matthias' lips, Matthias' eyes, Matthias' arms and hands and entire being all over him.
Why had he been denying himself this for so long, he asked himself? Emil had been right all along. He had been being stupid. He had been worrying himself for no reason.
Apparently, he'd drifted off into his thoughts, because all of a sudden he heard Matthias' voice cutting through his thoughts like a hot knife through butter, asking if he was okay.
