I stare at my reflection in the mirror and bite my lip. I've been questioning my outfit for the past 20 minutes. I know Jacob told me to wear whatever I feel comfortable in, but I wish he would give me a hint as to where we're going. It would at least narrow down my options.
I was really excited, though being the person I am of course I was a bit skeptical with going on this date.
"How did you get in my house?" I ask to the figure that suddenly appeared in the mirror.
I turn around to face Estelle.
"Back door was open." She says. I look at her sideways, not remembering leaving the back door open.
You look beautiful!" She says with a smile.
As I turn around to walk past her, she grabs my arm.
Her smile drops. "Did he do that to you?!"
I look at her confused and then realize she is referring to the cut above my eye.
"Don't be ridiculous Estelle!" I say frustrated.
"Your going out with him?" She says with disgust clearly in her voice.
I gently remove her figures from my arm before meeting her eyes.
"You need to be careful," she warns once again.
I roll my eyes, taking a deep breath. "Jacob is going to be here soon, I strongly suggest you leave."
"Fine, but I'll be back," she states.
"I'm looking forward to your next visit!" I say sarcastically.
She glances at me before exiting the room.
"BY THE WAY THERE'S SOME KID WATCHING TV DOWNSTAIRS!" I hear her yell from down the hall.
Once I hear the front door open and close, confirming that she's left, I make my way downstairs.
I see Mason sitting on the couch watching cartoons.
"Hey, Mason!" I say, sitting next to him.
"Hi," he whispers. I watch as he turns his attention back to the TV.
"Parents been fighting again?" I ask. He simply nods his head. "Mason I told you that when you want to come over you need to lock the back door. Okay?"
He props himself up against my side and nods. "Do you want ice cream?" I suggest. He tightly tugs on my arm and nods again.
"Of course you want ice cream! No one is ever too sad for some ice cream!" I say playfully, in hopes of cheering him up.
Before I make my way to the kitchen, the doorbell rings.
I open the door and see Jacob standing there. My stomach begins to turn. His eyes roam my body, before they meet mine.
His smile drops when he notices the strained expression on my face. "I can't go on our date..." I whisper. I allow him inside and try to explain the situation with Mason. In the midst of doing so, Mason runs up to my side and tugs on my arm.
Jacob kneels down to his level and asks who this little guy is, while tickling his stomach. "I'm Mason," he giggles. Jacob looks up at me.
"Well Mason, my name is Jacob". He waves at Jacob before running back to the couch. I signal Jacob to the kitchen. "Mason, I'll be right back." I tell him.
Jacob leans against the counter. "So explain to me why we can't go on our date?"
I take a deep breath opening the freezer and grabbing the ice cream.
"Mason lives next door. I used to babysit him but recently his parents have been fighting and so I allow him to come over once and while." I say looking at Jacob.
He nods as if allowing me to continue. "And i guess his parents were fighting again. I can't just send him home. I hope you understand." I say.
"I understand."
I set the ice cream down and play with my fingers. I know that he's disappointed. Its written all over his face, which makes me feel even guiltier.
"Come here," he says. I walk over to him and he grabs my waist.
"Even though I'm disappointed, I know that your doing the right thing. What your doing for Mason makes me like you even more!" He whispers in my ear.
His cool breath sends shivers down my back. His hands begin to massage my waist and I quickly release myself from his grip, blushing. I change the subjet.
"I had an uninvited guest today!"
"Who?" He asks.
"Estelle!" I tell him.
"And you won't believe what she said to me about you!" I finish.
