"Bonnie and Clyde is a hilariously overused trope, just like Romeo and Juliet. We have the crazy psychopath couple and the suicidal star-crossed lovers respectively. I don't even know why people find that romantic or something. Fuck, maybe that is kind of hot."
-초성민 (Cho Seong-Min)"Bonnie and Clyde were really dumb. They died when they were shot at through their car window. I mean, seriously. Who goes around murdering and robbing people but drives in a normal car? You'd think they could buy a more bulletproof one, but no. Besides, who goes around killing people anyways? Oh wait... I meant in real life!"
-박진성 (Park Jin-Seong)"We don't need money to feel good, 'cause you're the ride or die the rest of my life. Don't need a party to feel high, we're like the modern version of Bonnie and Clyde."
-YUQI, "Bonnie & Clyde"Going down the stairwell, the same awful and creepy feeling was put on steroids as he rushed his way down, almost tripping on multiple occasions. Jin-Seong ran all the way out of the building and looped around to the back before stopping to call 119. His head was swirling with uncertainty and guilt as he ran. He probably should have stayed to help.
The truth is, he didn't really know how to feel. Did he make the right choice by running away? Or should he have gone back? Nari was never after Seong-Min's life. She was after Jin-Seong. It was easy to see that she wanted to kill him, and that Seong-Min would just be collateral damage. But why him? Jin-Seong was a valid target, but Seong-Min was more so.
And then it clicked. Nari doesn't want Seong-Min to die. The true target of her revenge plan was Seong-Min. Jin-Seong thought about Seong-Min, and his heart felt as if it was tearing apart at the thought of her lying lifeless on the floor. Nari wanted this feeling for Seong-Min, for the rest of her life.
His hands shaking, he pulled his phone out of his pocket but immediately dropped it face down. The screen was cracked almost beyond recognition. Jin-Seong frantically tried to get the numbers in.
He relentlessly tapped the 1 key. 1.
Another one. 1. Ow. His finger started bleeding from being sliced on the cracks on the screen.
Now for the 9. He used different fingers, repeatedly tapping but each one suffered just as much as the last, with the screen being unresponsive due to the blood streaming through the cracks. Finally he managed to get the final number out. 9.
The phone rang for what felt like hours before he was on the line with the responder.
"119, what's your emergency?"
"A crazy bitch is trying to kill me, I ran away but my girlfriend is either dead or injured."
"Name and location?"
"Park Jin-Seong. I'm at..." Jin-Seong darted back and forth in his mind trying to think of the address. "Fuck, I can't think straight. I think it was something like 3693 왜 이것을 읽는거야 Street. They were fighting on the eighth floor."
"Police and medical are on their way. What is the attacker's name?"
"Jeong Nari."
"And do they have a weapon?"
"A knife."
"What do they look like?"
"Uh, medium height, she's wearing a black shirt with jeans."
"Okay, and what is your girlfriend's name?"
"Cho Seong-Min, medium height, bright yellow t-shirt, jeans, black shoes."
"Is she injured?"
"Probably."
"Are you injured?"
"Um," Jin-Seong stared in horror at the bloody streams flowing from his fingertips, to his phone as he clutched it to his ear, to the floor, dripping steadily with an irritating splatting noise on every drop. "Kind of."
"Where are you injured?"
"My fingers." Jesus Christ. He won't be able to play LoL for a whole week with his fingers in this condition, but that was the least of his concerns.
"Police and medical should be arriving in one minute. Please remain calm."
"Okay, thank you." He clenched his free hand anxiously, digging his nails into his flesh, causing them to bleed. As the sirens got closer, Jin-Seong felt an awful feeling in his chest. He was being consumed by worry.
"Thank you for your cooperation. I'm going to hang up now, Jin-Seong 씨."
"Alright." He stepped out to the front of the building, putting his phone back in his pocket and holding tightly onto the front of his shirt to try and stop the blood drip.
The paramedics rushed out of the ambulance, while one stayed to clean and bandage his hands. Police entered the building with their guns drawn out, fully alert. Jin-Seong watched them disappear into the stairwell as the blood on his arms were being cleaned off.
His only hope was for them to find Seong-Min alive, and for her to stay that way. He waited, staring intently at the double doors at the front for what seems like hours. Nari was brought out in handcuffs, clearly bloody and bruised, which increased Jin-Seong's anxiety.
Finally, he saw her. On a stretcher, surrounded by paramedics. Two of them carried her stretcher while a third was squeezing an ambu bag to help her breathe.
Jin-Seong swallowed hard. He probably could have helped her. If only he had just ignored her instructions and helped. He felt a wave of relief washing over him, but he was being buried alive by guilt upon seeing Seong-Min's condition.
As they rode in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, he held her hand, paying careful attention to her heartbeat. Jin-Seong couldn't imagine his life if it ever stopped.
