I've been holdin' onto pieces, swimmin' in the deep end
Tryna find my way back to you 'cause I'm needin'
A little bit of love
A little bit of love, a little bit of love

He hadn't wanted to get drunk that night. In fact, his plan had been to stay at home and sulk, like he had done so often during the past weeks.

But then he decided that he was done sulking. Sick of it actually. The breakup still felt fresh, even after a month it hurt. Especially because he didn't expect it to happen. Sure, they had some issues along the road, but they always made it work.

And Scott wanted them to work. Even when Avi decided to move to Nashville for a job opportunity, Scott immediately made the decision to join him. It was a no-brainer. He was glad that Avi was pursuing his dreams and wanted to go with him. As a songwriter and producer, he would be able to work there as well, so it was obvious that they would both be moving to Tennessee.

The time leading up to the move was difficult. Scott was excited to prepare everything. Avi had found a cabin a bit outside of the city where he wanted to live and Scott was ready to move them with him. He started packing his things, knowing very well that he wouldn't be able to take everything with him. Their LA house was way bigger than the cabin. But they had decided to keep the house for a while, just in case things in Nashville wouldn't work out.

Back then, Scott thought that this would be a good idea, but he didn't think that he would end up in the house, all alone.

"Avi? What do you think, how many boxes will we need for everything?" Scott called through the house. He was sitting at the kitchen table filling out forms to get offers from different moving companies.

Avi was in their bedroom packing up his things. He needed to go to Nashville for a week and wanted to take as much stuff as he could fit in his truck. It was mostly things he wouldn't need anymore, like his hiking equipment and warm clothes. When he heard his boyfriend call, he sighed softly and got up.

"Avi?" Scott called once more when he didn't hear anything from upstairs. "Urgh can't you for once just come here and help me?" He mumbled the last few words and stopped talking when he heard steps in the hallway.

"What is it, Scott? I'm trying to pack up my stuff. I need to leave tomorrow..." Avi said.

"I know, but I need to organise the move. And I don't have a clue how to do it" Scott returned. "I just need your advice, Avi, I know you're busy, just please..." He said this softly, he didn't want to fight with his boyfriend over boxes and movers.

"I don't know either, Scott. These are huge dimensions we have to think of. We're basically packing up our lives and taking them to Tennessee" Avi returned.

Scott sighed. "True... this is more difficult than I thought it would be..."

"Scott..." Avi began, but then stopped.

"Yeah?" Scott asked.

"You don't have to go there with me. I can see that it's stressing you out already. Your life is here in Los Angeles and I don't want you to give it all up for me."

Scott sighed. "Love we've been through this before: I'm not giving up anything. I can still work from there. And it's your big chance to finally get the recognition you deserve. Besides, I'm doing this for us, not just for you. I want to be with you, Avi. And if that means that we move to a cabin in Tennessee, that's what we'll do."

"Would you be happy in a cabin in Tennessee, Scott?"

"I..." Scott was taken aback by this question. "Of course I will be, what kind of question is this, Avi?"

"I just need to make sure, Scott. I don't want you to leave and be unhappy. We... we could also try a long-distance relationship for a while so we can figure this out?" Avi wondered.

"Don't you want me to come to Nashville with you? Is this what you're trying to tell me?" Scott asked. "If you want to do this on your own just tell me. I can take it."

"No, Scott, I just want you to be happy and I... I know your lifestyle includes parties and events and hanging out with your friends. But here we're living in a huge city. In this beautiful big house. All you have to do is get on an uber and you'll be in the city. We won't have this in the cabin. And-"

"You know what, Avi" Scott interrupted him. "If you want to break up with me just say it. I am giving up my life here in Los Angeles voluntarily. Not because you're asking me, but because I had this idea that this, that we would be something to last. But if all you are doing is telling me how unhappy I'll be if I do this, maybe we should just end things right here and right now."

"Scott..." Avi said. He hadn't expected this. Even if breaking up had been one of the options he had thought about himself, he didn't want it. But then again it could be for the better. "You know what? Maybe we should break up."

"You are not breaking up with me just because I want to come to Tennessee with you. That is bullshit and you know it" Scott said. "Why would you?"

"Because I know about Superfruit. About the fact that you are planning to turn down your own fucking record deal on top of declining to produce Kelly Clarkson's new album?" Avi asked.

Scott knew that it was serious when Avi started to curse. Avi seldom cursed, only when he was really pissed. But Scott was getting angry, too. The fact that he knew about Superfruit and Kelly annoyed him, especially because he didn't want him to know just what he was planning to sacrifice for the relationship. "So what? It's my decision."

"No, those are your dreams, Scott. You're throwing everything away right now and I will not let you do this" Avi shot back. "So maybe it will be better to end this here because eventually, this will all come back to haunt you. And you will be angry with me because you gave it up for me. And I don't want this for us."

"I would never..."

"Not even if it's about Kelly and Mitch?" Avi asked and when Scott looked down, he sighed. "See?"

"I'm sorry..." Scott said. "I..."

"There's no need to be sorry. I wish we'd part on easier terms, but it is what it is" Avi said.

Scott nodded. "Yeah. I... I need to... can I leave?"

Avi felt tears welling up in his eyes. He knew that this would probably be the last he would see of his boyfriend, no ex-boyfriend, in a long time. "Sure," he said, his voice being merely a whisper. "I'll try to get my things out as soon as possible."

Scott nodded. "Just let me know when... when you're leaving, I can stay with Mitch." He didn't dare to look up at Avi. He wanted to say something, wanted to find out whether this was all just a huge misunderstanding, but he also knew that they had fucked up. So he just left.

Lately I've been countin' stars
And I'm sorry that I broke your heart
It's somethin' that I didn't want for you
But I'm steppin' on broken glass
And I know this is my final chance
All I'm tryna do is find my path to you

~

Over time Scott tried to tell himself that breaking up had been the right thing to do. He knew that Avi would be happier in Nashville while he himself would be happier in Los Angeles.

And finding a new partner in a city such as Los Angeles would be easy. Right? So far, Scott hadn't even tried to do so. Sure, Mitch had given him a rundown of the apps and told him that they definitely needed to go to a few singles events, but Scott had blocked everything. Everything but one ground rule they had: No getting drunk alone. And Scott had stuck to that rule... until this evening. He was out with some people he was working with, artists and the party was amazing, the drinks were free. And Scott had enjoyed himself until someone had asked him about Avi.

Things had gone downhill from this moment on and the blonde remembered that someone had put him into a cab which brought him straight home. There he was now, sitting on the sofa, his phone in his hand.

His finger hovered over the call button and even though he knew that this was a bad idea, he pressed it.
