I'm in the bathroom brushing my teeth with Kai when the lights flicker again. Damn the weather is getting really bad. Once we are finished brushing our teeth Kai goes back to his room while I go to the bathroom.
Just as I finish washing my hands the power goes out, completely. I turn off the sink and blindly make my way to the bathroom door. As my hand reaches the door knob I hear a crash. I jump slightly wishing that I could fucking see where I was going so I could find out what that was.
I blindly make my way to Kai's bedroom door by holding the wall. I open the door and I'm met by silence. "Kai?" I call out.
I stand in the doorway for a minute to try and figure out what's going on. Only then can I hear the heavy breathing coming from in the room. "Kai?"
I slowly walk in the direction of the bed and once I get to the nightstand I feel around for my phone. I find my phone and turn on the flashlight, the first thing that I notice is the shattered lamp on the ground.
"Oh my god." I whisper under my breath. What the hell happened?
My mind circles back to Kai and my gaze lifts to the bed and there he is. His back is against the headboard and he has his forehead resting against his knees. His back is moving up and down like he's trying to breathe but can't. What's going on?
I put my phone on the bed so the light is shining up and sit down next to him and place my hand on his shoulder. "Kai? Are you okay?" My touch makes him flinch and lift his head. At this point I don't even care what happened I just want to make sure that Kai is okay.
His eyes are red and he has tears streaming down his cheeks. He is still breathing heavily, like it's not working. At first his eyes look confused but then they roam the rest of my face and recognition floods them.
Just as he recognizes me he puts his head back onto his knees, as if he's ashamed. I glance back at the door, if he's ashamed of me seeing this then he definitely wouldn't want Alex or Cooper walking in so I quickly get up and close it before I go back to Kai.
"Kai?" I say again as I sit down. I reach out my hand again, slower this time and he doesn't flinch or pull away. He doesn't lift his head either so I just sit there and comfort him.
I know a thing or two about panic attacks. I used to get them a lot in high school but I haven't had one in years. Whenever I had one I wouldn't like talking to anyone or trying to explain what was happening because most of the time I couldn't but I like just having someone there to comfort me so that's what I'm going to do for Kai.
He is still crying and trying to breathe so I slowly move my hand in small circles on his shoulder to give him any form of comfort that I can. After a few minutes the lights flicker back on and it's bright again. I turn the flashlight off on my phone and set it back on the nightstand.
I keep rubbing Kai's back and staring at him and then he slowly starts to lift his head. I don't say anything, just letting him do everything at his own pace. His gaze travels from mine to the light and back to my eyes.
I take my hand off his shoulder and he opens his mouth to say something. I know he's probably exhausted from his panic attack so I shake my head, not giving him a chance to say anything. Then I get an idea.
