"You look...familiar."
"Huh?"
"Gilly, wake up!" Thump. Her head struck the hood of the bus, one hand miraculously clinging onto the handle bars. She righted her posture, blinking out the stars in her eyes. Gilly was too bleary to hear the complaints spewed out by the girl beside her.
"Seriously? Why do you always fall asleep?" A tall, grumpy-looking girl jerked her chin at her. "We've taken this route for years!"
"Two years, Jocelyn. Just two years," she replied, yawning right after. The black-haired girl harrumphed. Jocelyn was scary when mad. Narrow eyes, high cheek-bones, a withering glare, and long, straight dark hair. Jocelyn intimidated anyone who crossed her path. Except Gilly of course. Being classmates with her at the same elementary school had forced Gilly to become friends with Jocelyn. Truthfully, it seemed Gilly was her only friend. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't all sunshine and rainbows with her around.
Another dream. They didn't last long. Gilly forgot her dreams whenever she woke up, but short dreams—she remembered those. She was speaking to someone, their faces blurred out. Familiar, but not so familiar. From a distant past or the future?
She straightened the tie on her uniform. It was brown. She scowled, again. She often caught herself scowling at the uniform, feeling something wrong in the mix. It's supposed to be blue, she would think. The only uniforms that were blue were the ones at RA International School. The name itself was so pretentious, it wouldn't be surprising the students themselves weren't. Only rich, chaebol, kids attended the private school, something Gilly nor Jocelyn could afford.
Nevertheless, she never stopped thinking about how her uniform would be blue instead. Something around teal or sky blue, paired with red and white striped socks. Weird combination, but it felt... right.
"Where are we?"
"One more station left. I'm not running late again." Once, they had missed their stop and Jocelyn slammed the button quickly and grabbed a sleepy Gilly in the direction of their school. She had lost her coat in the ordeal and was freezing the whole time. Ruined the soles of her sturdy shoes too. Should've been boots, she had thought.
"You could just let me continue sleeping," Gilly interjected. The bus rumbled through the streets, zipping past other vehicles and buildings. "I wouldn't miss the stop this time."
"Oh shut up, you're hard to wake up especially when you're dreaming," Jocelyn rolled her eyes. The student occupants of the bus ignored them, already used to their daily banter.
"Yeah because the one time you woke me up, I was flagged by the disciplinary committee," Gilly glared and oh-so-casually pointed at a purple strand in her brown hair. The other girl shrugged, hiding an amused smile. Jocelyn had brought dye to school that day for preparations for the school festival. The wet smear on Gilly's hair had awoken her from her sleep and by the time they arrived at school, Tessa, head of the disciplinary committee, marked her on their little sheet list. It never washed away, and Gilly was now going to face the entrance ceremony with a very noticeable blob in her dark head. For a public school, Trade Middle School was strict with their rules.
Gilly had tried to wash it off, borrowing her sister's own cosmetic supplies. Privately, a part of her thought it would be a shame to wash it away. When Tessa had given her a mirror, she almost looked different. She expected to see the same dark brown hair, slanted brown eyes, warm skin, and mole under her mouth, but that wasn't the image that greeted her in the mirror.
