Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.

Scraaaaaatch.

Will would stop helping me make pancakes from time to time to write something down, leaving me to wonder why while making everyone else pancakes. He wrote quickly, pushing the pencil over the paper and dragging it around accordingly. I found the noise of pencil hitting paper quite euphoric, smiling as he started scribbling again.

I heard footsteps come from the hallway, and from his room emerged Ash, still in pajamas and his head covered by his hat unsurprisingly. He also had his glasses on, but that wasn't new in the slightest.

"Morning Ash," I said, glancing back to where a pancake sat on it's pan, cooking at a leisurely pace.

"Hey, how'd you guys sleep?" He replied.

"Honestly, I think I'd rather be laying in bed watching TV right now, maybe sleeping," I chuckled.

I could practically see the lightbulb light up above Will's head, quickly scribbling something else down.

Ash glanced at him, raising an eyebrow and turning to me. I shrugged, turning back around to flip the pancake.

Mark and Joe soon emerged from their own den, rubbing their eyes and yawning. Mark beelined for one of the sofas, where Ash was currently sitting, while Joe walked over to Will and I.

"Whatcha doin?" He asked, his words slurring from drowsiness.

"I'm making pancakes," I began, glancing at Will. "He's...well, I don't know. I assume it's important though."

Will shook his head, I assume to snap out of his trance, and placed his pencil down on the paper.

"Sorry, I just think writing down everything that comes to mind is a good way to find lyrics. Just a personal opinion, of course and none of it is final," he ranted.

I shrugged, turning around again to my finished plate of pancakes. "Who's hungry?"

After everyone ate breakfast, the plates and utensils neatly stacked in the sink for later, everyone was sat around the living room.

I was sitting upside down on the sofa, scrolling on my phone, while Mark had begun playing random progressions on the guitar. Initially, I was surprised that he knew anything other than drums, but when I thought about it, it made sense. I mean, I knew how to play guitar and trumpet so it's not unlikely.

"Try like, a G sharp minor first, followed by an E," Will said from his spot on the floor.

Mark did just that, and it was utterly captivating; however Will didn't look satisfied just yet.

Joe spoke up, "I like those first two notes, but those last three...maybe try some E variants, those could sound cool."

We all sat in the living room for awhile, throwing out random chords and praying for something that sounded good. Eventually, Mark landed on something that sounded nearly perfect. After the G sharp minor and E, he had played a B sharp, B sharp 7, and B sharp minor.

I sat up with a start, chiming in for the first time. "Change the B variants to C variants."

Mark looked down at the neck of the guitar, placing his fingers in various places and playing the full progression. Everyone, and I mean everyone, lit up.

Will was the first to speak, "I'm gonna sit outside for a few." With that, he went out the back door and left all of us to our thoughts.

I stood up, deciding that it was time to be productive and heading into the kitchen to do dishes. As I finished putting the last plate away, Will ran inside, clearly ecstatic.

"I've fucking got it. Quick, get ready to record."

With those simple words, Joe grabbed a microphone and plugged it into his laptop, checking something before giving the all clear.

It took less than an hour and a few retakes, but Will had gotten the demo lyrics down. I was shocked at how fast he could write something so...emotional, but not in the cringe manner.

Little did I know, something similar would repeat...

Around thirty times.
