I left work for this? It is taking every single drop of patience I have to get this lunch over with. I don't know what the hell Cade was thinking of this girl, she is-
"So! Jace! What do you do?" She asks.
I shoot Cade a glare, and based off his troubled half smile, I can tell he didn't know she was like this. Her name is Emily, and she acts like a young girl in a sorority. Not that sorority's are bad, but this is a lot. I think it's because of her age, there is no way she is twenty-eight. Absolutely no fucking way.
The waitress comes over just in time. I will not answer Emily's question for the second time in the last ten minutes. I have known her all of ten minutes, and I want to be far away from her.
I can't bring her tonight. It's a black-tie event, not a college party. There will be a lot of speakers there who she will rave about. Actually, scratch college party, she will make it seem like a concert.
"I'm good, thank you." I tell the waitress. I wasn't lying when I told Amina that I don't do lunch. Every time I eat lunch, I feel like I am ready to fall asleep. I just shove three meals into my dinner and call it a night. It's worked for me all these years, no need to change it now.
I thought I had an important lunch to cover. I didn't. This is a complete waste of my time. The waitress leaves and I can sense her questions bubbling up again. I take my phone out for a distraction.
Me: How is everything going?
If I can't be at work right now, I am going to try and include myself somehow. I have no doubts that Amina will be able to cover the work by herself, she is just a mere distraction for me right now.
Amina: If you cared, you would be here now. I'm not covering for you if the LeBlanc brothers get here.
I don't think that's something I have to worry about.
Me: Even after all I did for you? I saw you got a promotion, congratulations.
Amina: Don't make me feel bad now. Remember, your linner is on me.
I shake my head trying to conceal my smile. I don't think a 'linner' will suffice. I need a date. I can't have this girl come with me. She can't even remember what I do. I also don't want to be seen with her, she's not my type.
I stand up and glance at Cade. "I'm sorry, brother. This arrangement wont work. I'll find myself a date."
And just like that, I make my way back to the office. It seems like that's all I do now. Besides last week, Cade and I went and visited our father. It was an interesting turn of events to say the least.
...
"I'm sorry. Can you say that again?" Amina says while showing me her smile, not even making a small attempt to hide it. I think she likes this.
"Say what?" I ask.
"You said you needed my... help, was it? You need me to be your date!" Her head tilts towards me. She does enjoy this.
"Yes. Just wear a dress or something and send me your address."
"No. Just because you ask for my, doesn't mean I am willing to give it to you."
"If you do this, then you owe me nothing, and you can keep your breakfast money." It's not an even trade, not at all. If I were her, I would be asking all the questions before I agree to something like this. I hardly even told her anything about it. I told her she needed to wear a dress, and that there will be champagne.
We sit in silence for a moment while I try to come up with a way to get her to come with me without blowing my cover. The entire point of me working here is to get an inside scoop of how the people work here. I need to know what to look for when Cade and I open the new building up in Germany.
Another reason I need her there tonight, she speaks fluently. I on the other hand only know the words that will not get me anywhere.
My phone rings breaking the silence between me and Amina.
"Mr. LeBlanc," I answer the phone as Amina's eyes widen in shock.
"What the hell, Jace?" he sighs. "I can't find anyone else for you, it's too last minute."
"I got it covered. Oh, you want Amina Lange there?"
"What? I thought you fired her?" Cade asks.
"No, we can make it work."
I end the call and look at Amina. She is on the edge of her seat with puppy dog eyes.
"You want to come, now?"
Her hands fall to the table. "I suppose I could be persuaded."
"Do you agree to all of the terms?" I ask knowing I have not told her much about this at all. That is my plan, though. If I told her everything right now, she wouldn't go.
"Uh, yes."
"I'll pick you up at eight. Sharp." I begin to walk away. "You can't be late to something like this Amina."
She must be really eager to meet the LeBlanc brothers. A low chuckle falls out of my mouth. I feel like this will backfire in my face.
