Finding her high heels impeded her progress down the stairs, Selena took them off when she reached the lounge and ran out to the front of the main building in her bare feet. Tiny stones in the rough surface of the road pricked her soles as she crossed it, but she could hear the road of the plane's engine and couldn't slow down. Running as fast as she could, she went through the clearing in the bushes and trees that edged the air strip and straight towards the white and blue six-seater monoplane that was at the end of the runway. Keith was at the doorway of the plane, handing up a bag to someone inside.

"Wait, wait," Selena shouted breathlessly, but he didn't look round and she realized he couldn't hear her. With a final burst of speed, she flung herself forward and reached the plane just as Keith was climbing aboard.

"Wait, oh Keith, wait," she gasped and stretching up touched his leg.

He looked around; saw her and dropped down to the ground.

"I have something to tell you before you leave," she whispered, her chest heaving.

"Really?" Hands on his hips in typical stance, he looked down at her with ice-blur eyes. "What?"

"I think we... that is Ben, and John and I might be able to persuade Heather to let Ben bring up some of the stuff in the treasure box and declare it as important historical artefacts," she panted. "Ben didn't know what she wanted him to do until we arrived here. He would've gone along with the idea if she hadn't blackmailed him by saying she would besmirch all our reputations if he declared the stuff to the government. I thought you'd like to know that I think she'll be relieved if that is done."

"Thanks for coming to tell me," he said coldly. "Is that all you have to say? If so, I'll be getting aboard."

"But wait," she out a hand on his arm. "Won't I ever see you again?"

She looked up at him pleadingly, her heart in her eyes although she didn't know it. He looked down at her, his face still set in hard lines, his eyes frosty.

"That's up to you, Selena," he drawled. "You have to make a choice. You know now I've no time for women who cheat. You can't have Hunt and me. I'm sure he feels the same way. So long?"

He heaved himself up into the plane. The door was shut. The plane taxied along the runway, gathering speed, and took off, wobbling a little but gaining height, and circled above her before going straight as an arrow towards the westering sun, seeming to split the blue arch of the sky.

Feeling more disconsolate than she had ever felt before in her life, Selena made her way back slowly across the rod and up the path to the main building of the resort.
