~Twelve Years Later~

"Hang on, hang on," I called out to no one as my cell phone rang. I hobbled down the hallway of my apartment with one heel on and the other in my hand as I raced to answer it.

I already knew who was calling before answering. It was my best friend of more than twenty years, Jung Hoseok, probably calling to find out when I'd be meeting him at the club. I picked up the phone that was sitting on a small table by my front door and quickly swiped the screen to answer him.

"Hey love," I said as sweetly as I could. "I'm on my way out the door now, I promise."

"That means you'll be another twenty or thirty minutes because knowing you, Em, you still aren't dressed," Hoseok replied, feigning annoyance.

"That's not true, I'll prove it," I defended, and turned on the video call function. I was greeted by his handsome smiling face as I panned the phone down my body to show him my tight thin strapped black dress. "See? I'm ready." I ran my fingers through my long dark locks and smiled.

"Congratulations," he offered, "but you're missing a shoe

"Congratulations," he offered, "but you're missing a shoe."

"Shit," I grumbled, and he huffed out a laugh. "It's in my other hand. I'm putting it on now," I said, letting my heel fall to the floor and quickly stepping into it. I could hear music playing loudly and the lights were low as I stared at the screen. "So did you get our usual booth?"

"Nah, this time we're in the VIP lounge," he replied with a confident smile, "and I already ordered the most expensive bottle of champagne so you better get your ass here before I drink it without you."

"You'd never do that Hobi," calling him by the affectionate nickname I'd given him when we were kids. "This is my night remember?"

Hoseok flashed his signature megawatt perfect smile and replied, "Yes, it is and we're going to celebrate. But, seeing as how I know you better than you know yourself, I figured you'd be running behind so I sent a car to your apartment. It should be waiting for you out front, I just got the notification."

I smiled and rolled my eyes at him but was thankful at that moment that he'd thought ahead; he knew me so well. I had to hand it to my friend...when it came to celebrations, he knew how to do it right. Hoseok had become a successful attorney and had already become a partner in his firm after only being on staff for just over a year. With the promotion came a huge raise in salary and he could afford to do things like this. Sending a private car to take me to the VIP section of the most exclusive club in town to celebrate my new job while sipping champagne that probably cost more than my car was nothing for him now. Having a rich lawyer with influence as your best friend definitely had its perks.

"You're the best Hobi," I said and blew a quick kiss at the screen. "I'm grabbing my jacket and clutch right now, see you in a bit," I said to him.

"Be careful, get here safe Emmie," he answered, his tone firm yet gentle. Hoseok never ended a phone call without telling me to be safe no matter where I was. He was almost like a protective brother and I loved him for it. No one had ever been there for me like Hoseok had and I valued his friendship over everything and everyone in the world.
