I didn't dare park the car in the garage the next day, I left it between the two cars I had left it between the night beforehand. I made my way up to the side of the house and entered through the side garage door. Some lights were on, unlike the previous time I had entered this way. Although it was night last time; this time it was almost noon.
'Find her,' a voice distantly growled. Probably a few rooms ahead. I stilled and waited for an answer but none came. The voice continued, 'What do you mean? The Jeep's not out the front... Yes, I can see it... But she's not here. I've already looked... Yes, everywhere... So what if I care where she's disappeared off to...'
Butterflies stirred in my stomach as the sound of the voice finally clicked. It was Levi and he was worried... worried about me.
'I couldn't save her parents, let me save her...' Levi's voice turned pleading.
From what? That metaphorical shark I'd thought of yesterday?
'If they've taken her then let hell reign down on them... I took the tracker out of her phone... She'd have found it then run away. She'd never trust me again... You don't seem to care, her parents can't, her friends don't know anything, neither does that shitty boyfriend. I'm the only person who she can trust at the moment... Yes, I did some digging. He's been to multiple nightclubs with other girls and taken them home afterwards...'
Levi knew that Jason had been cheating on me. How was that possible?
'Just find her... please... Devil out.'
The phone call seemed to be over so I trod lightly on the carpet to avoid Levi hearing me approach. I peered through an open doorway to see Levi pacing back and forwards across the foyer in long strides. His hair was a mess, his face drawn, shadows under his eyes, muscles taut, clothes dishevelled. He looked like the walking dead or better off... the devil. 'Ah-hm,' I coughed lightly. He whirled around and ran over to me and wrapped his arms around me in a crushing hug. 'Nice to see you too,' I gasped. He didn't say anything so I continued, 'By the way, I did go for a little drive.' When he didn't say anything again I was about to say something else but he shushed me. I pried myself from his arms and handed over the keys for everything.
'Where were you?' he whispered.
'Being sick on the side of the road. Those Jeep's do not make very comfy beds.' I scrunched my nose and stretched my back.
'Sick? Another episode? This was why I asked you not to drive. If you died in a crash because you fainted I'd be beside myself,' he fretted, pushing my hair out of my face, studying my body for any cuts or scrapes, his dark eyes taking everything in.
'See. Perfectly fine.'
He nodded warily but then mockingly smelt the air. 'Something stinks, when was the last time you had a shower?'
'A while ago.' I let him swiftly pick me up and carry me up the stairs. 'By the way,' I said. 'I met Theodore at Manly Beach yesterday while surfing.'
Levi stumbled on a step but quickly regained balance. 'You went surfing too! You could've drowned.'
'Good thing I didn't. Anyway, he was here while you were gone too.'
Levi stumbled on another step and his face paled.
'Not a fan of him I guess. I kept hidden from him and I don't think he recognised me yesterday.'
Relief seemed to flood Levi's features. 'What was he doing?'
'Snooping in your office. I saw him picking the lock and going in.' I left out the part about me snooping. 'He also left two nights ago in a black SUV all dressed in black. Does that mean anything to you?' I'd been carefully watching Levi's face while I rambled for any sign of something that would help my search for answers. Anger flickered in his eyes when I talked about the office and curiosity when I mentioned him leaving in a black SUV.
