'Oopsies. I hope you're glad that she's not you, you'll just have to put up with me until you end up in the same position. Either come down here and make it easy or I'll fly up to you on my dark wings and throw you off the side of the building to prove that your wings are fake.'
I put up my middle finger and swore more colourfully than I thought possible.
He chuckled, the sound scraped along my bones. I shivered and aimed a gun in Theodore's direction. I pulled the trigger three times but I didn't wait around to see if I'd hit him. I grabbed the drone and fled from the room. Theodore's muffled curses filled my ears and suddenly silence. I ran to the first lift and pressed the button to open the door, and continued this process for all of them. As the doors eventually opened on each lift, I rushed inside and pressed random buttons to random levels to send the lifts in all different directions. Any way to make my moves unpredictable. As I was running into the fourth lift, I spotted the first lift had stopped at the ground level. Shit. I pressed the button to level eleven and fidgeted as I waited for the doors to close. My heart was pounding in my mouth and I could barely breathe. No one was here to save me. It was just Theodore and I. Deep down I knew who was going to walk away from this encounter but I avoided acknowledging the thought. 'Guys!' Levi's voice blasted into my ear. 'It was a dummy covered in red paint. It was a fucking diversion, keep your eyes peeled for them. The Jeep was different to the one Theo drove away in. Tell me when you see them.'
'Found them,' I whispered. 'They're in the building and the woman is dead.'
'AND YOU DIDN'T THINK TO TELL US THAT SOONER!' Matthew yelled.
I flinched. 'Theodore hacked my earpiece.'
'I'm coming, I'm only a block away,' Matthew said and I could tell he was already running.
'Me too, although it could take me a little longer,' David declared.
'I'll be there in five, hopefully less,' Levi said through gritted teeth. The doors opened and I sprinted out and down the hallway, to the room situated above mine as it also had a balcony positioned over the top of the balcony I had been standing on minutes earlier. I unlocked the door and crept through the flat, cautious that there could be X personnel below. I sent the drone out into the night across from the building. It camouflaged against the dark glass of the adjacent skyscraper perfectly and the rumble of thunder hid the buzzing sound it created. I hid in a cupboard beside the door so that I'd have a quick exit. I took the handgun on my thigh and turned the safety off. I watched a group of men infiltrate the flat through the drone's camera. The glass exploded, the gunshots hidden by an extra loud clap of thunder and my legs turned to jelly. If I hadn't gotten out of there I'd be a piece of fleshy pulp on the ground. Two men jogged onto the balcony and looked up, one pointed up while the other shook their head and pointed down. The one that had been pointing upwards pointed upwards angrily and shoved the other back through the shattered glass door. I watched as they left the flat. My heartbeat quickened; how on earth it did I had no idea, it was already running at over a hundred miles per second. The seconds seemed to pass in slow motion as I waited for X to make another appearance. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Lightning flash. I counted the seconds. Seven... eight... nine... te-. Thunder. Ten k's away. It was bound to start raining soon. I couldn't tell the difference between not breathing and breathing, I could barely get a breath into my tight lungs, whether they were full or constricted. I had no clue.
Black-clad figures appeared on level thirteen and fifteen's balconies. Another group on level nine. They were closing in. Shitshitshitshitshit.
'Help,' I whimpered, scared that someone would hear me and a second later my heart would stop due to a bullet.
'Almost there,' Matthew panted. A gun went off and I flinched. 'Tyres are down, they won't be getting anywhere anytime soon.'
'They won't need to escape at this point. I'll be dead soon.'
