Ch. 21: Chasing you baby
“What was all that about?”
“It’s nothing, Charlie.” Carl spoke quietly with a tincture of dread.
“It sure didn’t look like nothing to me,” Charlie stated as matter of fact while entering Carl’s bedroom without waiting to be given a solid invite. Typical. “Aiden looked really pissed. What the hell did you do to him?”
“We had a falling out, nothing new.” Carl said, tying up his locs back in one place.
Charlie looked at him for a long moment with a thinking expression on. “The so called falling out has something to do with Aiden wearing your clothes?” he scratched his jaw, a knowing smirk tethering on his features. “In my world that’s something you do with a boyfriend.”
“What are you talking about?” A look of wary then settled on Carl’s face. Was the white lie written all over his face? “Those were not my clothes.” Carl could only hope he didn’t sound as pathetic as he felt.
“What are the odds of Aiden smelling like Downy Infusions Refresh, your fabric softener?” Charlie glared at his friend, eyes narrowed into slits. “Are you sleeping with Aiden, Carl?”
“You’re reading way too much into this situation.” Carl laughed breathlessly. “Stop with the whole matchmaker thing already.”
Charlie looked at him, suddenly feeling drained and exasperated. “I’m not reading into anything and definitely not trying to be a matchmaker.” his lips were pressed into a thin line. “I think I fucked up somewhere during the course of our friendship.”
Shaking his head, Carl chuckled mindlessly. “Why would you say something like that?”
“Because if my own best friend is finding it so hard to tell me he’s gay…” Charlie cocked a brow at him. “…I must’ve have messed up somewhere.”
Sighing, Carl sagged against a wall and rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m not gay.”
“That’s what every queer said at some point in life.” Charlie smiled without feeling much humor. “Whatever you identify as I get it, but you could have at least told me of all people. You used to trust me Carl, what happened?”
“I trust you more than words can say and I’m serious about not being gay,” His gaze drifted away. “Aiden is the only guy I’m attracted to. I don’t know how any of this works but there it is.” Carl sighed. “Out there in the open.”
