Ch. 30: Sweet dreams

Stacy was half asleep when faint movements dragged her back into consciousness. For a split second she had a sick feeling it was Zion. Her mind sprinted to the worst case scenarios and her heart began to beat a little bit out of the normal range.

"What... what's going on? Who's there?" Stacy's voice tightened with fear as she choked on her words. "For fuck's sake...someone...say something!"

"Didn't anyone teach you not to use foul language?" A new voice, with a fading Arabian brogue. Sounded pretty much like Aiden.

"Dad?"

"I don't remember the last time you called me that." the Iraqi muttered from a distance. "I thought that option was already long gone...off the table."

The light in the trailer was dim and Stacy's vision was taking its sweet time finding clear focus. All she could perceive was a sporadic dark silhouette though Aiden's presence was dominant in the same shit-hole trailer. Whether she was slowly going out of her own mind and turning delirium because of her inconvenient situation, she could really use the sense of comfort even if it was short lived from the man's pseudo presence, at least for the sake of her sanity.

Soon after Griffin had offered her a lousy tomato and ham sandwich and a bottle of water, the man had left the trailer and that was a few hours ago. Stacy might have fallen asleep for real this time, and didn't get to hear her new roommate who happened to be Aiden being practically shoved inside the cramped trailer.

Stacy slowly raised her head, eyes seemingly hazy with pain and dripping. "You came for me." It wasn't a question. "I thought you were never going to show up."

"You thought I was going to let you die in here alone?" Aiden cocked her an eyebrow. The man sounded incredulous. "Why would you make yourself think like that?"

Stacy's voice was barely above a whisper and Aiden hardly heard her. "I didn't think I was worth the trouble after everything I've put you through." Her head hung down, chin trembling, eyes heavy, and leaking a never-ending gush of tears. "Honestly," she chuckled humorlessly. "I can't tell if you're really even here or if it's my imagination getting the best out of me."

"Stacy," Aiden started warily, slowly as though he were a fireman approaching a skittish cat stuck on a twig. "Everything will be fine. I'm right here with you and we're getting out of this place. I promise."

"All this is my fault." She sniveled.

"How is any of this your fault?" Aiden asked with a notable frown. "It's not like you went out there and begged those fuckers to be abducted."

Stacy fidgeted and looked away. "I should've been more tame." She lowered her gaze to the floor. "You warned me plenty of times not to be problematic and now..."

"Hey," Aiden simply cut her off. "This is not your fault. Yes, you could've been a little bit more compliant but this has absolutely nothing to do with anything that you did." He let out a deep sigh. "Maybe we both could've done a better job with each other."
