Dream Three

The noises of people chattering penetrated my ears. I was sitting at the table with Gavroche, Marius, Eponine and Enjolras once more. I shouldn't have been surprised but still I was, the little boy knitted his eyebrows and asked me a question,

"I could have sworn you had just vanished and reappeared." I knew exactly what he was talking about, Eponine had said the same exact thing to me last night. I gave him a look of confusion and he shrugged it off as if trying to convince himself that he had imagined it. I knotted my hands together and smiled, listening to the buzzing and chattering of the people of the ABC Cafe. The people seemed happy and high spirited, in obvious good nature.

"Marius, are you okay?" Eponine turned around to face him, his eyes were downcast and he was still staring upon the surface of the table. He raised his face to meet the chattering of the people.

"I'm fine, I'm just- worried about what would happen to Cosette after the fighting, if I don't make it."

"You shouldn't think like that Marius-" Gavroche started before Enjolras cut him off,

"No one cares about your lonely soul." I stifle a laugh at the cruel, but notable thing Enjolras had just said. Eponine playfully slapped him in the shoulder as Marius's eyes widened. Enjolras was so intent on the revolution and almost nothing else that sometimes I don't think he realizes what he is saying as he says it. Gavroche nodded after Enjolras said that, obviously following what he did. Marius didn't look offended, more affronted and surprised that his friend had the nerve to say that. He blew out a breath and looked around. I was too frightened to say anything, it felt odd just being there when everybody else already knew each other.

"I'll be back, it doesn't seem as if we're doing anything currently." Marius lept to his feet and practically dashed from the Cafe, Enjolras looked at him with an annoyed expression on his face.

"Sometimes I don't believe it's really his heart in the battle itself. I feel like he's only here for us. And he's always chasing after that Bourgeois two-a-penny thing." Enjolras says and Eponine halfheartedly nods, as if she hated to admit it.

"He's my best friend but I agree. Cosette and I were children together, it pains to see us in comparison. Look at her, and then look what's become of me." Eponine said, though she didn't say it sadly. She said it as if it was a fact that she was content with.

"Nothing bad has become of you." Enjolras said and Gavroche nodded.

"You're willing to fight, something that most people aren't willing to do so. Even if Enjolras won't let you in battle you'll still find a way to help." Gavroche said and Eponine smiled at that nodding. I had always respected Gavroche. He was a strong character, definitely underestimated. Gavroche had always been equal, if not stronger and smarter to the adults around him. He was never treated like a child and he made a reputation for himself. He didn't care how he appeared to the people he disliked. It felt so unreal to be seeing all these people before me. I had to stop referring to them as characters, because right now, it was evident that they were real. Eponine had always been the character I had admired more than anyone else. She was so strong and willed, there was something truly special about her. There was something about Eponine that made half the school audition for that one role. The real Eponine, was just as I imagined her to act like and be. I wanted to make my portrayal of her on stage as accurate as possible. I paid close attention to everything she did.

"I am willing to help, or fight, or anything you may need me to do." I said as they all nodded at me, I wasn't sure what to interpret from that. Within a few seconds Enjolras lept to his feet and called out,

"I need someone to scout the streets, watch for protests or any abnormal activity." I quickly nodded and jumped into action,

"I'll do it!" I leap to my feet, and feel eyes on me as I do so. My stomach squirms as Enjolras nods,

"Alright, if you see anything out of ordinary report back immediately." Enjolras said,

"I'll come too, no use just sitting here." Eponine got up and looked at me. It felt awkward being here. Eponine and I walked from the cafe, passing Combeferre, who had ceased writing and was now gazing at the sky as if contemplating something deep.

"Philosophers." Eponine mumbled as we set off, into the streets.
