Chapter 12 : A Turn of Events

Merlin hands Harry an umbrella “Right. This is yours.” He goes to Eggsy next, handing him a briefcase “That's for you.” And lastly he goes to Elena “And I picked this specially for you”

“A handbag? Really? What does it even do??” She opens and sees an array of gadgets and two guns “Oh my Gods, is it christmas?” She looks at Merlin and he chuckles at her “Take good care of them”

“What are those anyway?” Harry asks in curiosity “Merlin actually made the gadgets I kept suggesting him to make, my goodness thank you!” She gives Merlin a quick hug and she goes back into the bag and sees lipstick and she shows it to Merlin “You didn’t”

“I absolutely did”

Elena jumps around like a child “Okay, okay. Enough about me, is there more?” Merlin walks over to the big pool table in the middle of the room and opens it up and he hands Harry a bat “Press the "S".” The bat suddenly opens up “Minesweeper. Courtesy of Statesman.” Eggsy goes to grab a ball “What do these do?”

“Be careful, those are hand grenades”

Merlin walks over to grab a small case and he hands it to Eggsy "As discussed… this is for the endgame. I'm entrusting it to you." Inside had a small syringe and Eggsy shows it off to Elena and Harry. Merlin stares at the array of weapons and picks a machete

"And I'm entrusting this... to me."

"Okay everyone be careful this place is scattered with landmines" Elena whispers as Harry opens the minesweeper "You know the game was more fun" Elena comments and Harry gives her a look of confusion and she rolls her eyes "Minesweeper is also a game on a computer"

As they move in further through the forest, cutting away pesky leaves blocking the path, they soon reach Poppys base "Right. This is where we split up." Harry starts "Pincer movement. Elena, you're with me." He commands as she nods "Eggsy you'll be with Merlin, you signal when we're in position." Eggsy turns around getting ready to get to position but everyone was stopped a clicking and beeping noise. Elena stares in horror as Eggsy has stepped on a landmine "I swear to fucking Gods" Merlin quickly moves to Eggsy "You move, we die." Eggsy nods nervously, clearly against the idea of death. Merlin rummages through the suitcase and brings out a can "Luckily, I have this." He moves away the dirt covering the landmine "This spray will freeze-" He starts to spray the landmine "-the trigger mechanism…" He continues "give us a split second." Elena starts to get nervous, unknown to what will happen next "So on the count of three… " The can begins to run out "what I want you to… " Merlin pushes Eggsy away which in turn causes everyone to turn away expecting an explosion. Elena looks back and sees Merlin standing on the landmine "Oh you fucking idiot" She says looking at her best friend with panicked eyes

"Merlin, what the fuck have you done?"

"Our journey together began many years ago… when your father did the same thing for us."

"Our journey began with a mistake I made. Give me the can. That's an order." Harrys walks closer and was handed the empty can. Elena stays silent, still trying to comprehend whats happening

"Can's empty. Split second's over.
You three need to get going." Merlin looks at Elena apologetically "No, no, no.
There's got to be another way." Eggsy begins to think of a way to get Merlin out of the landmine safely "Mission comes first." Merlin stops Eggsy and Harry reluctantly agrees "He's right, mission comes first" Eggsy looks at the two in disbelief "But-"

"Eggsy! This is no time for emotion. Remember your training. Or we all die. Now get on with it. Do as you're told. Move it! Go." Merlin encourages and Eggsy angrily gets to position Harry turns to Merlin nodding to him

"It's been an honor."

"Good luck."

Harry goes to position as Elena stays and Merlin looks at her with sad eyes "You promised…" Tears threatened to fall but she keeps it together "I know, but you have to keep going. Here, even though I broke mine, promise me to complete this mission successfully" He looks at her "I… I can't leave you here" She tries to reason "El, please. Promise me" Elena lets out a shaky breathe. Her head says 'go, keep going. You'll make it' but her heart fought back but she had to make a choice "Okay, I promise" She answers looking at him and he smiles

"Thank you… Now go, you can do this"

Elena goes to her position near Harry's, seeing how Elena interacts with Merlin gives Harry a slight hint of jealousy but Harry understands, they had no one but each other so they stayed until one of them had to leave.

Elena watches as her closest friends, one of the closest things she had to a brother, sing out as he waited for his demise. Her heart ached, she wanted to stop him, she wanted to run to him and move him away from the explosion. She wanted to save him. but she couldn't, she can't.

Instead she thought about all the fun things and adventures the have gone on together

"I'm so fucking jetlagged"

Elena says leaning back on her reclining chair tiredly "Here" Merlin hands her a cup of tea "Thank you… I have gifts by the way, they're all in that suitcase over there" She points to a corner as she downs the tea "I labeled yours" Merlin walks over to the suitcase and opens it up to see at least five boxes with his name on it "Jesus Elena, you have a shopping problem"

"I only have one when it comes to my friends, I have the riches and you're all my sugar babies, whether you like it or not"

Merlin chuckles opening one of the boxes to see a red and white apron with ruffles on the bottom and he shows it to Elena "Really?"

"Come on, admit it. It's kinda funny

"Elena, you need to watch how much you drink sometimes" Merlin carries Elena in his arms setting her down on a bed in the HQ "Shut up…" Elena murmurs moving around to get comfortable "Drink water first be fore you sleep" He offers her a cup but she stubbornly refuses "No, if its not alcohol, my body will just simply refuse it"

"I'll tell you my real name if you do"

Elena sits up properly and downs the cup in one go "Ok! I did it! Now tell me" He rolls his eyes at her.

Elena turns away from the explosion, unable to even look at anything near it. A sudden feeling of anger and fury surges through her. This ones for Merlin.
