The next few days went by and they were terribly boring. It was the next Monday at practice when I walked into the gym and noticed something going on. Some of the members of the team were there and they were talking to someone who I hadn't ever seen before. He was short with mostly brown hair, except for a small streak of blonde sticking up in the front. I decided to just ignore the situation going on and enter the gym.
I was able to ignore the short kid for a while until he said something after noticing me. "Whaaat?! Tanaka you never told me that one of the new first years on the team was this cute!"
I looked over to the short boy and felt my entire face flush a deep red. He just complimented me. Why would he compliment me? And why would he say something like that? How am I meant to respond to that? Ugh! This is so embarrassing...
The short boy walked up to me and stuck his hand out. "The name's Yuu Nishinoya! But you can just call me Noya. What's your name cutie?"
"U-uh Y-Y/N" I managed to stutter out quietly. Nishinoya tilted his head in confusion, he must have not heard me, so I spoke slightly louder the next time I spoke. "I'm Y-Y/N Kageyama... I-it's uh n-nice to meet you, N-Nishinoya-senpai."
I noticed a certain, strange sparkle in Nishinoya's eyes when I said his name. I guess he likes being called senpai... I guess if it makes him happy I might as well refer to him as that...
"S-so, Nishinoya-senpai, are you a part of the volleyball team?" I asked.
"Well yeah! But where's Asahi?" Nishinoya turned to look at Daichi.
Daichi had a strange look on his face, he seemed somewhat sad with what Nishinoya had asked. "Well... Asahi isn't on the team anymore and I haven't heard much from him."
Nishinoya's entire aura seemed to darken from how he was before. Nishinoya seemed... angry or upset. I felt myself tense up. Nothing ever ended well when someone got angry, and I had no clue as to how Nishinoya would act when he was angry. I had no idea what I had done which could have possibly made him upset.
What did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do what did I do...
I heard the same words spiral through my mind. They kept on getting louder and louder until they were all I could hear, the words themselves made me feel sick. My eyes darted around the gym until and I couldn't focus on what was going on around me.
Next thing I knew, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I jumped at the feeling and looked to see Tsukishima next to me. I took a quick glance around the gym and noticed that Nishinoya had just left.
"You alright shorty?" Tsukishima asked.
"Y-yeah, sorry. I don't know what came over me..." I responded.
"It's fine, you don't need to apologize." Tsukishima took his hand off of his shoulder, and he seemed to begin to reach to pat my head, but quickly retracted his hand not wanting to make me uncomfortable.
I went through the rest of practice without too much seeming to happen, or if anything did happen I didn't pay much attention to it. I instead spent most of practice either focusing on playing volleyball or Tsukishima. I don't know why but my eyes always seemed to wander over to him when I wasn't forcing myself to focus on something else. It was rather peculiar, but I didn't pay too much mind to it. I just assumed that it was some strange coincidence that my eyes always seemed to land onto Tsukishima.
Towards the end of practice, Tsukishima and I were cleaning up when he began to talk to me. "I noticed that you kept on staring at me during practice, are you okay?"
"Hm? Yeah I'm fine I guess. Why wouldn't I be?"
I turned my head towards Tsukishima and we made eye contact for a second. Tsukishima quickly turned his head away from me and there seemed to be a small pink blush forming on his cheeks.
"It's just- nothing, it's nothing just forget I said anything." Tsukishima still seemed like there was something on his mind, but I wasn't about to try and push him to say something if he didn't want to say it. I just shrugged it off and finished cleaning up.
After a while I began to wonder something. If Nishinoya plays on the team, then what position does he play? I had never actually asked anything about that. I decided that I would ask Daichi, and so before I left the gym to get my things from the club room I stopped near Daichi who quickly turned to me.
"Is there something you need, Y/N?"
"Y-yeah I uh wanted to ask what position does Nishinoya play? I asked him if he was on the team but I forgot to ask him what position he plays."
"Oh, Nishinoya's a libero, he's a pretty darn good one too. I just wish he would actually be willing to play without Asahi being here." Daichi commented.
"W-what happened with Nishinoya and Asahi?"
"Well Asahi was the ace of our team for a while, until he quit after the preliminaries last year. We didn't get very far and ended up losing to Date Tech, I have a feeling that Asahi might have blamed himself for that. Asahi quit and Nishinoya was super close with him, so Nishinoya was upset once he found out that Asahi had quit. A few other things happened and Nishinoya ended up getting suspended from school for a little while, and he wasn't allowed to participate in club activities for a month. I guess Noya still isn't over Asahi quitting the team, and Noya doesn't want to play unless Asahi is too." Daichi sighed.
"Well if Nishinoya won't play without Asahi, have you tried getting Asahi to join the team again?" I asked.
"Suga and I have tried, but Asahi seems to avoid us whenever he can, and if we try to bring up anything about volleyball he dodges the subject."
"A-ah, I see." I began to ponder, what could I do to try and get Asahi and Nishinoya onto the team again? It would definitely make a bunch of the team members happy and it would be the least I could do considering how useless I was on the court.
"Well, don't worry too much about it. You should probably go get your stuff and get home, it's getting late. I'll finish everything here."
I nodded in response and then headed to the club room, sending a small wave to Daichi as I walked out of the door. I quickly changed and gathered my things. I noticed that Tobio had already left and begun walking home.
Tobio had been avoiding speaking to me or being near me at all throughout the past few days. I wasn't sure what had happened but it was nice to not have Tobio yelling at me everyday. The walk home was rather peaceful, and I learned how much I really did enjoy going for walks by myself. It was quiet, no one was outside except for me, it was like I was in my own little world, separate from all reality. It was me all by myself, and I was too mentally exhausted to think of pretty much anything at all.
My head was empty. It was quiet. It was peaceful. I was all by myself, and for once, it was nice.
