I wake up. Frozen air rushes through the window. The window that I closed and locked last night. Quickly I pull the sheets up covering my entire body except my head. Outside I hear the early morning traffic, people yelling and cars honking. I can almost see the cars, bumper to bumper. Suddenly I remember my dream. I can still feel myself falling and my -her- eyes. When I close my eyes I can see them staring back at me. Dark, bottomless, emotionless pits. I shiver and not just from the cold.
"I did not!"
"You did so! Look. The crap is all over my bed," My sister screams. My older sister and brother never stop arguing. Jess is moving out soon so I think that will be good.
"Not my problem."
"Oh my God you are such a-"
"Language Jessica," my brother teases. She hates her full name. I hear a slam, Jess just ran out the door. Then I hear thumping. Harry is running up the stairs.
"Stay away," I command even though I know he won't listen. I grab my pillow and hold it, ready. The thumping stops and the whole house goes silent.
"Hell-O! Hell-O! Hell-O!" Harry slides through the door and lands on his knees.
"Shut up," I throw the pillow and he falls backwards.
"Ow," he says more from surprise than from actual pain.
"Get out or get me breakfast," I order and point at the open door.
"Well if I was to make breakfast I would have to leave anyway so..."
"You pest. What did you do to Jessy anyway?"
"Nothing! I swear. She's just flipping out. I don't even know what I supposedly did." He actually sounds serious.
"Well can you make me breakfast?" I ask.
He falls back again with a dramatic sigh, "There's pancakes downstairs."
"Why didn't you say so?" I leap out of bed and hop across the frozen floor. My black fuzzy ugg boots stand by the door and I jump into them.
"Get out!" I yell halfway down the stairs. Harry comes out of my room and slides down the banister.
"Mum! Harry slid down the stairs!" Jess yells.
"She's gone loser," Harry falls gracefully off the end and walks past Jessy making sure to flick her head. I follow behind him.
"Morning Jess."
She just nods and walks back to her room. It looks like it's underneath the stairs. I mean, the door is and it looks like a cupboard but it is actually the biggest room in the house and technically has an ensuite. It's connected to the bathroom on the other side of the stairs.
Harry is already in the kitchen with a pile of pancakes in front of him.
"Hey! I saw that." I hold my hand out, waiting. Meekly Harry pulls his half-melted peanut butter cup out from between his pancakes.
"Thank you," I tear it in half and give him the smaller piece. I grab two pancakes and slap then onto a plate along with some butter and maple syrup and then half a peanut butter cup. Mum think Harry and I are disgusting but honestly, it's amazing.
Jessy is the oldest and then Harry one year later and then me five years later but me and Harry get along better. We're kind of mean to each other but in a nice friendly teasing way. But then sometimes I actually want to kill him.
"So last night I had a dream." He states.
"Yeah?"
"I was in this black box and I couldn't tell how big it was and then this test appeared in front of me. And it just kept growing and growing and then suddenly I was in this park with you and George. And George -he had this gun and them I said 'not now' and he jumped up and started attacking this leaf. And yeah, and you jumped up and said 'Jessy is not sleeping' but really robotic. And then George shot you and I woke up."
"Woah," is all I can say. "I had a dream," I say this naturally not remembering my dream and then I do remember it and shiver. "There was a reflection of me and she chased me through this house or something and then I got crushed by a ball and we ended up at this cliff. She had a gun? Yeah, and we fell of the cliff but she fell slowly and I just smashed against the water. Then this wave came threw me against the cliff and I died. But first I saw my reflection hit the water and she was just staring with these eyes. They were black, I mean completely black and they seemed endless and then she did that evil grin thing. And I woke up and my window was wide open."
"Yeah, that was me."
"No kidding." I pick up my pancake and take a huge, hot and sweet bite of it.
"Harry!" Jessys piercing scream rings through the house and we wince. Harry stares at me with pleading eyes.
"You're on you own," I slide of the stool and tiptoe up stairs. Maple syrup dripping down my chin.
