A Promise Is Broken

The sun shone above them, letting the clouds watch over them from afar. The four children were sat down on a blanket - a nice, red, silky blanket that held their food. The oldest, Pearl, was making Sandwiches, whilst the other three were laughing at some joke. She hummed calmly.

Sausage stood up, a grin plastered his face. "Tag!" He tapped his brother on the shoulder lightly, immediately bolting away as the other scrambled to get to his feet. Gem laughed, going to sit with Pearl.

"Come here you little monster!" Fwhip yelled, nearly tripping as grass tickled his legs. He eyed Sausage, trying to keep his eye on him as he got further away. The younger was faster, smaller than Fwhip too.

Their laughs echoed through the fields, along with playful screams as Sausage had finally been caught. He fell to the floor, landing on his back as he howled with laughter. He hoped it would never end.

"Come on, we'll get Gem and Pearl in on this" Fwhip suggested, stumbling back as Sausage jumped to his feet and started running.

"Race you!"

"Oh, you're on!"

"Can I help?" Pearl looked at Gem and nodded, immediately picking up the bread and getting to work. She smiled, the quiet breeze of the wind calmed her, and the gradually louder laughs of her brothers made her happy.

Louder? Oh no...

Sausage had landed a mere meter away from Pearl, scraping his knees against the grass. He giggled. She turned her head to Gem, who had started chasing her brother. With a roll of her eyes, Sausage got up and she followed. They ran.

The four of them sat there, the grass moving in steady waves as the wind pushed itself against the small beings. They formed a circle - or tried to - and looked at the synchronised plant with a smile.

"I want us to promise something" Gem had spoken, breaking the silence that had calmed them. The other three looked at each other, then to the ginger. She smiled. "I want you to promise that we'll always be together"

She held up one of her pinkie fingers, and Sausage immediately joined his with hers. "I promise!"

"I promise to always stay by your side, Gem," He joined his with them, looking to Sausage. "And you and Pearl".

"I promise to always protect and never go against you guys, no matter what"

"You promised!" Gem yelled, watching the chaos unfold. Rulers were bleeding. She looked at her oldest sibling, eyes wide. Blood dripped down the other's face, though she couldn't see much.

"Sausage... You promised us!" Pearl shouted, staring at her youngest brother as he could only chuckle. He raised his sword, and the battle started.

And just like that, a promise is broken.
