• BUCKY'S POV •
The atmosphere in the tower is tense right now. Romanoff had pushed for this mission to be head of the Avengers agenda as soon as it became apparent that there were ex-widows stuck in the place. Whilst we have all been excited by the idea of someone new joining our crazy, dysfunctional family, now that the day has arrived I can tell there are jitters in the air. What will they be like? Will they fit in? Everything is about to change..
Fury had just alerted everyone to the meeting room so I know it was time to suit up. And it won't be my normal suit today.
I slide a silk tie around the neck of my shirt and lace it up, flicking down my collar and pressing the soft fabric flat to my chest.
Images of these poor girls flash in my mind. From what I've been told, I'm imagining the worst case scenario.
Honestly, I don't see how what I've been told could be any worse.
We have to be on our A-game tonight and for me, it's personal. I know all too well what it's like to be trapped, besides this means a lot to Natasha. Which means it means a lot to Steve.
Staring at myself in the floor length mirror beside my door, I barely recognise myself. I haven't worn a suit since the night of our high school prom in 1934, over one-hundred years ago, and I would only be lying to myself if I said that my suit then was anything like this one.
Tony had supplied us all with extortionately expensive custom tailored outfits to replicate the men that we would be impersonating tonight.
Three wealthy gangsters that are currently hog-tied in the glass cage that once held Thor's brother, Loki.
These men are supposed to be the top clients tonight at this secret establishment. Fury and his team had infiltrated their systems earlier in the month and we had been working to corner and capture them for weeks. They were difficult men to place.
A sudden knock on my door pulls me from my train of thought as it's pushed open. Steve nods at me as he stands in the doorway.
"Ready?" He asks as I nod. Normally there would be much more conversation between the two of us but even last night, everyone sat in silence. I think the reality of what these girls have been through had finally hit us. Im sure in Steve's opinion, and certainly in mine, assaulting a woman in this way is one of the sickest things a man can do.
I stand, quietly following him out into the hall.
"You know, I heard that these widows enlisted themselves into the army after they escaped" Steve says as he tilts his head towards me. This perks my attention. My lips press together in sympathy and I raise my brows in surprise.
