As a vampire, it was supposed to be a simple task to read one's mind and manipulate their thoughts into anything I wanted but when it came to Knox and Cain, I couldn't. They were either protected by something very powerful or I simply didn't have the strength to read an Alpha's mind.

It took decades before I calmed myself down at the denial of any blood. Was it so hard to share some blood? I had already bitten both of them and from what it seemed, they enjoyed it. The pain from a vampire's bite only lasted for a couple of seconds or maybe a minute. It was just a stinging and nothing more.

Maybe they enjoyed seeing me beg.

I couldn't differ as I couldn't read what went through their minds.

As the twins left the room, I cleaned up myself and washed all of their scents away from my body. While showering, I noticed a few marks, spreading from my neck to my stomach. Love bites. A grunt slipped between my chattered teeth and I rushed out of the washroom with my blood boiling. No one could leave a mark over me.

No one.

I hadn't given permission for that to anyone.

Ugh.

My skin...

My thoughts diverted upon hearing the vibrations of the burner phone inside the room. I quickly left the washroom, wrapped myself in a towel and reached for the phone that stayed hidden behind the books the entire time. The number belonged to Natalie. She was trying to call me over the past five minutes but I was too busy, dealing with my own self.

"Hey, what happened?" I asked, calling her back.

There was a lasting silence on her end and it grew my anticipation until she opened her mouth and spilled, "I told Mom and Dad."

"And?"

"I told them you were in Thornwood and you were being held back by the Alpha's ruling there. They grew furious and they deployed a whole rescue team which will be reaching to you in the next couple of days." she explained, her voice slightly cracking.

"What?!" I screamed and then continued slapping my hand over my mouth. "What? Why? I'm not being held by anyone—well, I am but it's safe here and I thought it would be much better if I stayed here. They can't come or they will get killed, Natalie." I replied while rubbing my forehead where creases had formed by now.

"I'm sorry. But the better news is that I'm on my way to and if I can reach before them, I can stop them." She sounded a little more cheerful while breaking this news.

"Do you have a death wish?"

"No. Should I?"

"Oh, my God. When do you think you'll make it here?" There was no point in explaining how dangerous it was for any vampire or anyone else to enter this town. Everytime I took a step closer to this town, I was attacked—by a rogue, or a stranger, or a wolf or one of the Alpha's men that guarded the mountains but my life was threatened each time. There was no way Natalie could make it here alone.

And if she died...

"Three days—four maybe. It's a long distance and there aren't many flights nearby Thornwood." She concealed her fear and replied to me.

"Fine. Just delay it a little and I'll do something."

"What are you going to do?"

"Nothing." I groaned. "Nothing. I'll talk to you later."

As soon as I cancelled the call with my sister, I fled to the closet and grabbed the cleanest shirt and pants I could find before rushing out of the room. I couldn't let Nat be murdered by anyone while she was on her way here and I knew for a fact that she wasn't going to listen to me. And whatever vampires my parents deployed for my rescue couldn't be killed either. The quickest plan that reached my head was to bring in Natalie, alive and well and show my parents that we were fine so they'd call back their vampires and there'd be no war among the wolves and them.

I went down the stairs and looked for the twins but failed to find any of them.

Approaching one of the servants working, I looked into the eyes and questioned, "Where is Cain?"

She hesitated for a second but gave in after that. "He's in the meeting room."

My brows furrowed. Meeting room? "Where is that and what meeting?"

"The meeting with the council. It's downstairs, near the cellar." The servant replied, staring at me with wide eyes. The second the compulsion wore off, she walked away without a single thought of what happened.

I remained calm. Panic wasn't what I needed now. I needed to convince the twins to allow my sister in and that was all. I was positive they'd listen to me and meet my demands. And if they didn't, then I had to keep a second option which was to leave Thornwood and go back home to my parents and my sister.

It brought me great sorrow knowing that the option was still there, that one day I had to go back and face all my fears once more, worry about my life and keep myself safe and away from the dark creature who was still on it's hunt. It was a never-ending massacre and the only safe town in the whole entire world was Thornwood.

I bubbled up a bit of courage and went downstairs, the underground level of the estate, one I had never been in before. If it weren't for the servant providing me with the information, I wouldn't have known there was a cellar, a meeting room and a council. When I reached down, I found the entire level eerily quiet and dead as if a soul hadn't passed by these walls in decades.

Upon walking further, a few whispers reached my ears and I perked my head at the direction of the voices. There was a large, giant door to my left where the voices left from—some voices I recognized and others I didn't. I placed myself against the door and eavesdropped on the meeting even when knowing how dangerous it was.

"The second this information passes out of this, we would all be paying a hefty price. So, Alexander, we aren't including any other wolves into this meeting. Have I made this clear?" It was Knox, his roaring voice that bought a tickle to pass through my stomach.

"Understood, Alpha."

"The full moon is nearing the town, however, we will be barely able to sight it but because of its significance, we can continue restoring the gem's power and protecting the object we possess. As far as the concern of other pack wolves at the borders, we aren't able to let them in. The second we do, we appear weak and then the dark creature is upon us." He continued, blabbering something I couldn't understand.

I stopped hearing after the word gem.

What gem?

I knew something was happening here. My thoughts ticked to Nat when she mentioned a specific weapon that had been hidden inside Thornwood that kept the dark creature away from the town. Could it be it? A gem? It couldn't be that easy. And there was no way a gem could keep the creature away from here.

I returned my attention to the chatters inside the meeting room but everyone was silenced down. Several minutes later, the door opened and Knox walked out along with Cain. Taking a deep breath, I stepped back with a pounding heart. My swallow echoed through the estate and I opened my mouth to apologize but was quickly silenced when they towered over me with a deep red spread across their faces and eyes.

"What the fuck were you doing here?" Cain questioned.

I wanted to reply but my heart was at my throat. "I—I—I wanted to—ask something." I stuttered, unable to form the words. It wasn't like I had been ever caught eavesdropping before. It was my first time and I had nothing to say.

They neared me and backed me to a wall. "And you decided to come down here? How long were you here, Candice? I won't ask this again." Knox asked, grabbing my arm.

"Oh, no, you don't need to answer that." Cain shook his head. "She's in a dire need of a punishment and nothing more."

I blinked at him, "Wh—what?"
