 Chapter 70

Gideon wanted to kill them—the twins. It was his sole purpose. All this destruction and chaos was just to get to his brother's that lived safely in a small town up north where the sun never set. All along, he played well but I couldn't let him win.

"You should go!" I screamed to Knox.

The wolves jumped over me, attacking Gideon—the dark creature who had taken his true form for a minute. He changed from smoke to bones when he tried to take me down and kill me and as much as it was the perfect moment for the wolves to attack him, it wasn't for Knox.

"No, Candice, I can't leave you alone," He grabbed my wrist and pulled me up from the ground. "Don't fucking ever tell me to leave you—"

Before he began growling, I cut him off and said, "No, you don't understand. He wants to kill you and he will." I pushed him off me, hoping he would run and return to the town, but he didn't budge. "Please, Knox, please, you have to go. You can't be here." He didn't deserve to die, not in this, not here.

The more I pushed him away from me, the nearer he got. Grabbing my arms, he restrained them and pulled me toward him while I begged for him to leave.

"I'm not leaving you. Get that through your head." He whispered in my ears before slowly pulling me away from the scene.

Moonlight cascaded. A thousand stars covered the night sky. I looked over my shoulders and found the wolves jumping on Gideon, taking his form down. He was unable to shift into his monster as he was being attacked, and he couldn't kill the wolves over him as he was weak. The only thing that bought him strength was his monster.

This could work.

"Wait, wait," I said in a raspy breath while slowing down. Turning around, I got a clearer view of the wolves that held the dark creature to the ground.

Gideon's wails and screams echoed through the forest. The sword rested nearby him while the wolves tore him apart inch by inch, dipping their sharp canines into his body and ripping his skin till the horrific screams reached everywhere.

But there was a moment of strength where he began rising.

"Get out of here!" I yelled while storming away from Knox and reaching for the sword.

In matters of a few seconds, Gideon rose, much more powerful than he already was. Even in his true form, he had the strength and he used his strength to toss the wolves away. One by one, he picked up the wolves, killed and then plunged them away.

Bodies began scattering. The wolves growled and howled while at their last breaths. The dark creature didn't show any mercy while killing those that had attacked them.

My eyes widened. Horror struck inside me. My heart ran a thousand miles, and my limbs froze for a minute while I stared at the way the wolves were getting slaughtered.

It wasn't just one wolf—there had to be at least a few dozen of them and by the time Gideon rose, there wasn't a single wolf left alive. Their bodies were spread all around, some near my feet and some near him.

The air got thicker, and the sky grew stormier. Heavy clouds formed above us and soon the showering of rain began. Every nerve in my body was stiff. I couldn't move or run. Sorrow fell in my heart. I couldn't bear the reality, the reality of this world where someone had this much power.

The wolves that had died—died protecting me. They were here to save me, and, in the process, they sacrificed their life for me.

I inhaled a sharp breath before snatching the sword off the ground. Tears spilled on my cheeks, more and more every second.
