 Chapter 67

For a minute, I thought Cain had noticed the blood in my mouth and over Knox's lips, but he didn't. It was dark and shadowed where we stood. He was unable to see what we had done together when he had left me with Knox alone.

Knox wrapped his hand around mine, holding it tight while my heart thumped. It wasn't the fear of being caught, it was the fear of knowing that he was here. Barely any time had passed by. I was just at the tower minutes ago, looking over at the dark forest, waiting for him and he was here.

"How do you know he's here?" Knox asked his brother in a shuddering breath. He had terror in his eyes, not for himself but for me.

The world around us slowed down. The music was still playing, drumming through the borders and people were still dancing but I couldn't see or hear any of it. Beyond Knox and Cain, my world was blurred and the only face running through my head was Gideon's.

The elder.

"We got signals from nearby. The plan worked, he's going to be here in no time and we need to be prepared." Cain replied, stiffening his shoulders as if he wasn't terrified. He tore his eyes away from his brother and looked at me, "Do you want to do this, Candice? You still have a choice."

I nodded my head without wasting another second. "I want to do this. I've waited too long to back away from this." I responded with hesitance still in my voice. As much as I wanted to be confident and strong about it all, I couldn't and deep down, all I wanted to do was run away and never see the dark creature again.

"You'll be fine," Cain whispered. "I promise."

Knox tightened his hand around mine. "Let's go?" He said.

I walked along with them both, leaving the party. Everyone around was celebrating and cheering, none of them had an idea except for the wolves surrounding and guarding the borders. Not many people were informed of the plan, just a few here and there.

I sucked in a breath and my body trembled underneath the cold. Knox swung his arm over my shoulder and pulled me closer to his warm embrace where I melted and rested my head over his chest while Cain led us to the border.

"Don't worry, you're strong and you'll get through this. I promise you'll be fine and once you're back, we can sneak out and get some dinner for you." He whispered in my ears, slowly and casually.

A smile grew over my lips. I knew what dinner meant. He was much more opposed to letting me feed straight from the vein while Cain only wanted me to drink the fresh blood from the blood bags that he had stored at the house every day.

Cain's cell phone rang and I turned my attention there while walking behind him, hand in hand with Knox. The air got thicker and the weather got colder with every minute passing by.

We reached toward the end of the town and stood a few inches away from where the sun had stopped giving its light. It was fascinating yet terrifying to see the night in front of me. The part where we stood was bright, full of light and colors, and in front of us, there was just darkness, death, and a large forest. A few wolves, shifted, roamed just outside the town but they were careful of what they were doing.

My lips pressed into a straight line while I looked straight ahead into the single road that led into the town. It was empty.

"He's getting close," Cain blew out a breath before turning me around to him. My hand parted from Knox who now stood behind me. "Be careful. Anything could happen." He reached underneath my shirt and placed the sword in my pants before buttoning up the coat and covering me up.

The sword could barely be sighted with the layers of cloth I had been wearing but I could feel the cold metal brushing against my skin and my hair rising.

While Cain buttoned my shirt, I sensed something from afar. A cold wind struck me, throwing a few strands of my hair on my face.

"I sense him..." I trailed off.

Cain raised his head and looked at me surprised, "How?"

I shrugged and shook my head, "I don't know but I can feel him getting closer. He's in there, in the forest, Cain." My voice began breaking with every word that left my mouth. The more seconds passed, the feeling got stronger and stronger. "It's the bond. I can tell how close he's getting. He can feel me too. I can't let him inside my head." I quickly said while turning my head to Knox and then back to Cain.

Cain placed his hands over my shoulders, "He won't get inside your head." He reassured me. "It's going to be fine. Look at me. Nothing will happen. No one will get hurt except for him. We will hear anything out of the ordinary and as soon as something goes wrong, we will come for you." He explained while rubbing my arms and bringing warmth to my shivering, cold body.

My teeth chattered against each other. I panicked. "But—what if—something might happen. I'm not sure. I'm scared."

"Candice," He cupped my face and raised my head, "Don't be scared. You have a hold on him. He won't harm you and even if he does, we are right here to protect you. I promise that you will not get harmed, in any way."

I pursed my lips together and wrapped my arms around him, giving him a tight hug before moving back and turning to Knox. I felt a lot more relieved after being in their embrace for a few seconds. My heart stopped racing at an erratic beat even when I sensed Gideon reaching closer. I found him fighting to reach inside my head but I didn't let him.

"You okay?" Knox asked, holding my face in my hands.

"Yes." I closed my eyes and sighed, "I'm fine. I want to go out and get over with this."

I slipped my arms away from Knox and stood between the twins. Neither of them was interested in ever knowing their long-lost elder brother. Who would be? I'd be terrified to know I had a murderous sibling.

"These wolves will follow you from a distance," Cain said and before I knew it, a group of twelve wolves gathered around me. Saliva dripped from their sharp canines while hunger hovered in their eyes. They were strong, muscular, and terrifying. I found myself shaking with fright just at their appearances. "If anything were to happen, one of them will report to me and we will come for you. He's one man and we are in thousands." He continued while pressing my shoulders.

My eyes returned to the dark forest. I blew out a breath and gathered my strength. "I'm ready. I should go." I whispered.

He leaned inward and placed a kiss on my forehead, "I love you, Candice."

"I love you too." I smiled at him.

Cain distanced himself away from me and went behind the wolves. The group of wolves covered me, protecting me even before I could step out of the town. I trusted them, I trusted everyone including the twins but I was afraid to kill someone.

I had never done it before.

Knox reached forward and placed a bundle of kisses over my face, lightening up my mood. "I love you and I will be waiting for you. You're a strong girl. Victory will be yours." He pressed his hands on my shoulders and pulled me closer into a deep hug. "But until you return, I'll be missing me."

"I love you too, Knox." I breathed out.
