I had fun last night. I made some friends already, on the second day of school. They are pretty cool, especially Zak. It's to bad he apparently can't talk though. I wish to get to know him better.
Everything is now unpacked, we are all fully settled into the new house. It's pretty nice having everything done, except where the house is. I miss Ant so much. "So, did you make any friends?" My dad asks. It's like he was reading my mind. "Actually, yeah. Yeah I did." I respond with a smile.
"Really! Ok, I need details." He says excitedly, resting his face in his hands on the counter, bringing his full attention to me. I laugh a little before responding. "Well, I have coding class with one of them. He helped me code a plug in for Minecraft." I explain, unconsciously smiling. "Ok, and what is this "friends" name?" He asks, putting quotations when he said 'friend'.
"Wha- dad! I haven't even known him for a day!" I exclaim, burying my face in my hands in embarrassment. "And it's Zak." I mutter into my hands. "Zak" He echoes. "He seems nice." He retorts, turning around to tend to the coffee maker that was almost ready. "Yeah, he can't talk though." I say with a slight frown, uncovering my face. "No words?" He asks, not turning around to face me.
"I assume so.." I furrow my eyebrows. Now that I think about it, I don't really know the real reason he's mute. I mean, it's non of my business, but it is something to wonder. Maybe he just got zero words, maybe he already used them up, maybe he was just mute to begin with, I don't know.
I get pulled out of my thoughts from the sound of my phone vibrating against the marble counter. I pick it up to see it's Ant calling me. I immediately answer it, excitedly greeting him. "Ant!" "Bad!" He greets back. "How are you doing? Made any friends? Are they nice? Are you getting bullied? Do I need to beat someone up?" He immediately starts playing twenty questions, asking them all at once, earning a small chuckle from me. "No beating people up, and yes I did make some friends."
"Well, are they nice?" He asks eagerly. "Yes, very." I laugh. "Good, good." He comments quietly. "Found your soulmate yet?" He asks right after. "How would I know?" I ask with a small frown. "I don't know, I just thought because you're meeting new people maybe one of them is the one." He explains. "Maybe.."

I walk into the classroom right as the bell rings, technically not being late. Right on time. I look around to see an empty seat right beside Zak. I smile as I walk over to him, taking the seat beside him. "Hey!" I greet with a smile. He doesn't look up at me. He was nose deep in some kind of textbook. I tilt my head in interest as I watch him do some kind of hand signs, mirroring the illustrations in the book in front of him.
"Whatcha go there?" I ask, leaning a bit closer towards him. This time he actually looks up at me with a smile. He quickly glances at his book before doing some hand signals at me. I raise my eyebrow in confusion.
"Mind explaining to me?" I ask, gesturing to the book. He takes out his whiteboard, writing something down quickly before showing me with a big, excited smile. "It's ASL, this is my moms old text books from the corses she had to take for her job!" I nod along as I read it. Once I was done he erases it, continuing to explain. "It's another way for me to communicate with you guys!" I read.
"That's awesome!" I exclaim excitedly. I could tell he was very happy about my reaction. I saw a small excited glint in his eye, like he was relieved I reacted the way I did. "Well, show me what you've got so far!" I encourage, motioning towards the book. He turns back to the book, excitedly flipping through the pages.
He flipped to a page with the alphabet, showing me how to sign each and every letter. He also showed me how to sign things like family members, greetings, basic responses, some animals, and colours. It was really cool, and I enjoyed it a lot.
"That's really cool Zak!" I comment with a smile. He smiles back, signing 'thank you', which I knew what because he showed me. Then right like it was on cue the bell rang, dismissing us for our next classes. "See you at lunch!" He writes before signing 'goodbye' to me. I wave back with a smile, turning to walk the other direction.
My next class was science. Not my favourite, but it was ok. The entire class I kept thinking about ASL. I really want to remember it so I can understand him. I signed the alphabet over and over again, I lost track at fifty times. I was ready to make it my goal to memorize the whole ASL language. I have no idea why I want to do that so much, I didn't know what was motivating me enough to do it. I guess just the idea of being able to get closer with Zak stayed at the front of my mind the entire time.

I spent the entire day trying to memorize the ASL Zak taught me. That's when I thought I may as well just do my own research instead of trying to do it all by memory. I sat at the kitchen island, laptop in front of me with a million tabs open, all containing ASL articles and information websites.
As I was deep in thought I couldn't hear that the door opened. "Hey bud, what are you doing?" My father asks, hanging up his coat before walking over to me. "Oh, uh my friend is mute, and he's learning sign language so I thought I would learn too so I can understand him." I explain, turning to face him on the island stool I was seated on.
"Is this the "friend" you told dad about this morning?" He asks, also putting quotations around 'friend'. "No, not you too." I say in embarrassment, turning back around to face my laptop. "Your dad was right about when you talk about him your cheeks turn pink." He comments. My eyes widen, immediately covering my cheeks with my hands as I turn back around to face him. "I don't know what you're talking about." I say. He just laughs at my gesture, walking around to the other side of the island.
"There's the Bad I know." He chuckles. He was right. I kind of acted a bit off when we moved, and even I knew it.
