I wake up to my alarm going off. Letting out and annoyed groan as I pull the pillow over my face to block out the sound. Moments later the sound stopped, the new feeling of the blackest being yanked off of me replaced it as I look up to see an annoyed Zak staring down at me. "Turn it off next time, you're closer" He signs with an annoyed expression, making me smile. He's cute when he's angry.
"Yeah, yeah." I brush him off, getting fully up. Zak normally spends the night at my house, only sometimes going to his house for the night. I have only ever been in his house two times in the past four months. One other time from when we first met and went to his house to practice ASL together. That was fun.
If I were to guess I would think it's because of his stepdad. Speaking of whom I have never seen let alone meet. Yet, I small part of me is telling me that I never really want to meet him. I've met his mom. She's really nice. Zak definitely takes after more of her qualities.
"Ready?" Zak asks before starting up the ignition. "Yup." I respond, sitting back in the slick leather seat of Zak's car. It wasn't anything special. A small five seater car, but it was still really nice. I'm to scared to even go for my drivers license test let alone get a car. The whole concept of driving scares me. If you're not good at driving then that can lead to a car crash, which doesn't sound fun at all.
We make it to school, immediately heading to our first class which we have together. As we walk down the busy halls I feel a warmth around my hand. I look down to see Zak holding my hand in his. My stomach immediately erupts with butterflies, even though we have held hands many times; As best friends do. I could feel my face heat up as we make it to our first class.
We look around to realize the only two vacant spots are all the way across the room from each other. A small frown spread across my face, looking over at Zak to see he realized it too. I feel Zak squeeze my hand ever so slightly before letting go to walk over to the seat closest to the front of the class, leaving me to get the one at the back; which isn't that big of a deal. The only sucky thing about it is it's no where near Zak.
We had to start a whole new unit, starting with a big lecture. So today's class wasn't the best. I had a perfect view of Zak though, so I could sign to him. The whole class he kept looking back at me, signing little jokes that made me hold back a laugh.
"When is this fucking class going to be over" He signs, widening his eyes in annoyance. "Language" I sign back, making him roll his eyes playfully. "Is there something you would like to say you two?" Miss Steph asks in annoyance, putting one hand on her hip in an impatient manner as she stared at me and Zak.
"Uh- no Miss," I say sinking into my chair in embarrassment, watching as Zak looks back at me with a smug smirk. He's lucky he isn't the one who has to apologize for us. I expect a "thank you" when he gets his words. Yet, I hope he doesn't. I know! It's selfish of me to think that but it's just, we have touched so many times and it's clear we aren't soulmates; which makes me a bit disappointed. And I don't even know why. I don't like Zak like that. Do I?
"That was terrible, I thought we were going to actually do something" Zak complains as we made our way to his locker. "Yeah, it was pretty boring." I agree with a shrug. I stay quiet most of the way there, going to meet up with the rest of the group in the library before our second classes. My mind was stuck on the thought I had earlier.
I don't like Zak like that."Guys, guys, guys!" Red yells out to us as he full on bolts our way. "What!" I exclaim, laughing a bit at how much energy he has. "Ok, so there's this guy who just moved into the house right across the street from me!" He explains as we take a seat at the table that Clay and George were already sat at. "Ok.." I nod, wanting him to continue.
"He seems really cool! We talked a bit the other day, and I think you guys would like him!" He continues with a smile, not being able to stay still in his seat. "Sooo," He adds, dragging out his words. "You guys should come over after school to meet him." He concludes. "Does he go to the other school or something?" George asks, leaning his body against Clay who was sat beside him. "No, he's doing online school for the last month. Since there's only less then a month of school left his parents saw no point in sending him this late into the semester." Red explains. Fair.
That reminded me of something that I probably shouldn't have forgotten about. "Oh yeah!" I exclaim loudly in excitement. "Ok! So now I have good news for everyone!" I say, taking my turn to make everyone excited. "Alright so, the other day my best friend from California called me and said he's going to come here for the summer! He's coming sometime on the first week of summer break!" I explain with an excited squeal. I guess Ant was right about my horrible memory-
"He must be awesome since you're this excited" Zak signs, making me smile. "He really is awesome! You guys will love him!" I exclaim to everyone. "Two new people, exciting." Clay shrugs with a smile, putting an arm around George; making him blush like crazy. Three more weeks!
As me and Zak make our way to Zak's car which was parked peacefully in the school's parking lot I couldn't help but get excited. I have always liked meeting new people. Well, when I have friends to begin with. Moving here was stressful and exhausting. I enjoy welcoming people into our friend group kind of thing. The way Red talked about this boy made him sound really nice.
Zak looks over at me before starting the car, looking at the big smile on my face. "I'm excited." I shrug like it's obvious, the smile not leaving my face. Zak nods as to say "same", returning a warm smile. Sometimes he doesn't even have to use ASL, I already know what he's about to say lots of the time, or what he means when just using simple gestures. I have gotten pretty good at reading the raven haired boy.
We all decided on meeting at Red's house right after school, so that's where we headed. As we drive onto Red's street we start to see a small group of people in the distance. The closer we got the more we realized it's everyone already being there. Zak parks right in front of Red's house. We quickly get out to meet the newcomer.
"Zak! Bad! This is Finn!" Red introduces us with an excited smile. My eyes widen as I realize it's the employee from the coffee shop we went to the other day. "Hey! I know you!" He exclaims in realization. "Yeah! You work at the coffee shop not far from here, right?" I observe. "Yup, I wanted to get a job so I'm not just at home all the time." He explains. I nod along, taking in every word.
"Wow, what a small world huh?" Red says jokingly. "It's nice to see you again, Finn" Zak signs. "He said it's nice to see you again." I translate. "No words?" Finn asks, furrowing his eyebrows in sympathy. Zak shakes his head solemnly. That's when I realized, they haven't touched yet. What if Finn is his soulmate?
My stomach started to ache with jealousy and confusion. If they were soulmates then that means Zak could talk again, but he would be with someone else. As everyone, except for Zak, talked amongst themselves I stayed quiet, fully deep in thought. If I don't let them touch then there's no risk in them possibly being soulmates. Is it that easy though?
