Zoey Kagel

"Zoey."

I hear his voice as soon as I step down the staircase, feeling better after a quick shower and a change into my pyjamas.

There's nothing wrong with what I found... it's not like I have a right to be mad. And I'm confused why it bothered me at all. It just made me feel a certain way which is unfamiliar to me. Uncomfortable. Kind of jealous?

"It's okay, Luke," I say, midway down the staircase.

He looks absolutely mortified. "I didn't know they were there."

When I meet him at the bottom step, I touch his arm. "I know you didn't mean for me to see them. It's fine, okay?"

He shakes his head. "They're not from me. I let Elijah stay here sometimes while he's at the studio. Im going to kill him. This is my space for relaxing, not shagging someone."

"Oh," I say.

"He's such an idiot."

At his desperation, I get into his line of vision so he can read me better. "Let's laugh it off? It's already forgotten."

He blows out a breath.

"Luke."

He frowns at the floor. "I'm not that guy anymore. I swear it. That part of my life is— fuck! They're not even mine."

Waiting for a moment, I let him go through the motions until I grab his shoulder to pull him eye to eye. "I know they're not yours. Take a deep breath. Let's just forget it happened and get on with our night."

"I care what you think of me, Zoey. I don't want to mess this up."

"Nothing is messed up. Come on, let's go carry on watching television."

I stop midway to the couch when he tugs me back to stare intently at my face. "I like you, Zoey."

As he stares down at me, the left dimple in his cheek slipping into place, I rest my hands on his shoulders. "I like you too, Luke."

"Yeah?" God, he looks so happy.

It forces a laugh from my chest. I nod. "Yeah. I mean... you're incredibly kind and giving... and protective."

When he lowers his head, the tip of his nose accidentally brushes my cheek, but it sends a bunch of excited sensations through me. "You'll make me blush if you're not careful."

I laugh, pushing him. "Oh, yeah?"

In an instant, he's pulling me back towards his chest, mouth crushing mine into a kiss. The little gasp I let out, forces a long groan to rumble in his chest. The taste of peppermint cinnamon on his tongue overwhelming, especially when he pushes it against mine.

"So hot," he whispers under his breath when he edges back, wiping his thumb over my bottom lip.

I'm balancing with my hands resting on his shoulders in a wonderful daze. Then a smile catches me out of nowhere and he's chuckling and pulling me back to the comfy couch while he grabs two PS5 controllers.
