premier side

                                       im on my way ;D

WHY DID I JUST SEND A WINKING EMOTICON?! I clicked my phone off and threw it across the room, bouncing off my old couch. I had gotten home from school a little while ago and decided to text Ruben to see if we could hang out, then for some reason I sent a freaking WINKING EMOJI to my text.

Who even sends winking emojis, they're so cringy... I pulled my sweatshirt over my head and flipped up my tousled hair, snatching my phone and stuffing it into my pocket. "Mom, I'm going to hang out with Ruben!" "Okay!" I grabbed my car keys from the marble counter and jumped in my Kia, humming as I drove.

Cilia' you're breaking my heart, you're shaking my confidence daily...

oh-oh-oh-oh-

I parked the car(luckily no scratches or dents yet) and made my way in, turning to the premier side and walking in with the crowd of people. A girl bumped into me, mockingly smiling as she passed.

Or was she flirting...?

I sat on the bleachers near the top row so I could see everything. I people- watched for a little while before dark blue, green, and gold jerseys spread to the ice. My eyes glazed over all the skaters when I saw #19 Garcia. He was warming up in a passing circle, sweeping movements and precise calculations. If you looked hard enough, you could see him think.

The whistle blew and they huddled around their coach, watching him gesture and direct the line changes. Ruben took the center dot and leaned down for the face-off. The puck dropped and he shot it back to the defense, then transitioned backwards going to the offensive end to catch the pass. He was at a 2 on 1 with an opposing player and opened up, passing to his teammate as they did a one-timer and shot. The puck didn't go in, but got covered by the goalie. A face-off proceed and within moments, Ruben scored.

He was amazing.

Sure, playing instruments and having every song from High School Musicals 1,  2, and 3 was nice, but it couldn't compare to the feel of flying that Ruben must have felt while he skated. After his next goal, he saw me. I waved at him and it looked like he was going to wave back, but then a teammate came up and distracted him. Darn it...

When the buzzer rang, they cheered then filed off to the locker room.
I trotted down to the lobby and admired the old hockey pictures as I waited. Front-toothless grins filled the bottom margins of the poster, with uniforms in every color. But as they got older, they weren't smiling in the pictures. A stone expression canvassed their faces as they glared at the camera. Ruben told me that the photographer made them do that, which I thought was kinda sad. I found his face in the A-team of last year, in dark jerseys with dark expressions. His brown eyes were deep, like he was thinking of something more then life. His black brown tinted hair was a bit more combed back then his normal unbrushed mop, but it looked good on him.

I saw him exiting the rink with his bag slung over his shoulder, stick in hand. "You did great out there!" I took the stick and pretended I was taking a shot. He put his stuff in the back of the car and sat in the passenger seat with me at the wheel. I was the only one out of our friend group who had passed their driver's test so I was the driver every time me and Ru or the group went together. It didn't bother me though. It was nice, feeling in control. "I still can't believe you have any reason to own this monster of a car." He buckled in as I laughed. "It was for a good price. Now."
I pulled up my AMC app and hid it from his view mysteriously. "So. What sounds like the best? The new karate flick, the new action-adventure-Indeana-Jones -ish one, the new one with Chris Pratt in it or..." I swallowed my feelings and wrinkled my nose. "A rom-com."
I did like watching romantic movies but I knew Ruben probably would die before watching Twilight or The Princess Bride. So I abandoned my feelings of romance and focused on the normal blockbusters we watched.
