After we preformed, deafening applause came as I inhaled. I belted my heart out which should have exhausted me alone, but the way Freya smiled at me made me lose my breath even more.
"I want to do that every day for the rest of my life!" Avery cheered and hung on to me and Freya's shoulders as we shuffled under the bleachers to avoid the flow of kids. Clearly Avery still had energy but everyone else in the band was beyond tired.
"It feels like my fingers are bleeding." Ruben blew on the tips as Jessie inspected them with a wry laugh. His pale fingertips touched Ru's dark fingertips and for a moment, he seemed to freeze. But then he chuckled as he pulled away to fidget with his thumbs.
Something was going on with those two and I was very intrigued. But I kept my mouth shut and focused on not staring at Freya, which was kinda hard because I felt her looking at me. Avery pulled all of us into a huddle and went into a deep voice. "Let us mark today as the day we became legends." We all solemnly nodded and filed out, heads held high, satisfied with our performance. And it turned out, lots of people were impressed. Especially my lab partner in science class.
His chestnut coloured hair was smoothed back with a gel and his white smile was impossibly shiny.
"I'm Soren! Great job in the auditorium, it was awesome watching you." I smiled back at him, and responded with a "Thanks, it means a lot!", before realizing he didn't say 'you guys', he just said 'you'.
Creepy.
I picked at my black nail polish as he flicked the chipped bits off the table like they were bugs. We followed along to the teacher's assignment and did our work with him trying to make conversation while I avoided making conversation.
"Bet you can't guess what I'm thinking right now."
"Okay. I can't."
"I should start a band."
"Have fun."
"It would be called...I don't know, but it would be awesome. Would you join my band?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"I'm already in a band."
*He shrugs suggestively*
"So?"
*I get up and tell the teacher I need a bathroom pass so I could roam the halls and bang my head against the brick walls at stupid boys*
Long class period short, it was irritating.
At lunch I sit down next to Jessie who was the only person there besides Ruben-and he was sitting right to the left of him, leaning closer then necessary to tell some story. Avery came with Oscar and they sat down to Ruben's side-taking every spot besides the one next to me.
"Hey!"
SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT-
"Hi!" I turned my head and responded to Freya in an overly peppy tone bordering on sarcastic. She didn't seem too put off though because she slid in right next to me and smiled. But then I saw a girl behind her. "Hi..." She had milk chocolate hair and long painted nails in patterns of sunset tones. She was also very small, I noticed.
Some people are just built different...
Two other girls were standing by her as if they were the backup dancers in a music video. "I'm Arielle." The leader spoke to me. "Nice...to...meet...you?" I replied in a non-committal tone. "Sit with us."
She's direct.
"No thanks."
She just sent me a dirty look as her posse flipped their hair and left, sneering.
Oh, joy.
My first mean girl.
