Chapter 54
The first two through the door today were Mabel and Eddie. They came walking in holding hands looking just as cute as can be. Eddie was wearing a blue flannel shirt today that brought out the blue in his companion's eyes and a nice pair of black slacks. Mabel in contrast was wearing a light flowing dress that swished around her legs as she moved. The dress itself was white but it had a riot of brightly colored floral patterns all over it making it look more like a watercolor painting than a dress. Mabel's hair was a bright yellow today as well that matched her gold slip on shoes. Her eyes lit up as she took in the room and she began to pull on Eddie's big meaty hand trying to get him to move faster.
Next through the door was Alice and Ralph. Alice was wearing a tan cotton knee length dress while her white curls looked starched and impeccably done. Ralph was in a short-sleeved tan button up shirt with a pair of dark brown polyester slacks. Alice smiled kindly at everyone as she looked around the room. Ralph however squealed in delight as he bounced in anticipation. As he picked up the pace to begin investigating Alice followed behind him smiling broadly at his joy.
After them came Mildred pushed again by Kenneth. She wore a short sleeved white blouse paired with a pair of pastel pink capris. Kenneth looked just as put together with a pale yellow short sleeved polo that was paired with a pair of grey and white checkered shorts that stopped just above his knees. To top the whole thing off he had a pair of bright white suspenders. The two of them looked around the room with mild interest until Mildred's eyes landed on Mikey. Kenneth having noticed this obliged to wheel her over to visit.
The last ones through the door were Agnes and Bertha each one being pushed by Charlie and Fanny. Charlie and Agnes where the first through the door laughing together at having left the other two behind. Charlie was wearing his standard navy colored coveralls and loafers. Agnes today was once again something else. She had a bright blonde beehive, white cat eye framed glasses to match her white dress and what a dress it was too. It looked like a replica of the iconic dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the movie 'The Seven Year Itch'. Elizabeth suppressed a shudder as a vivid image of Agnes standing on the grate holding the front of her dress down popped into her head. Mentally wiping the image away, she looked at Jan who was beside her. Elizabeth snorted as she watched Jan's jaw drop in shock. Charlie winked at the both of them as he pushed Agnes's chair into the room while she adjusted the girls after spying all the young men in the room. Elizabeth and Jan both snickered at that. Bertha rolled her eyes at her sister's antics as Fanny glared at the backs of the two of them. Fanny was wearing another muumuu today this one was white like Mabel's dress but instead of the floral pattern being big, bold, bright colors her flowers were just the outlines in almost a china blue color. Bertha in contrast to her sister wore her grey hair in a simple low bun. She had on regular blue plastic rimmed glasses. Even her clothing was understated with a simple light white blouse and powder blue long shorts. There was not an ostentatious thing about her, Bertha was simple and practical. It was a glaring reminder of the things she had been through. Elizabeth was hoping to use today to bring a little magic back into their lives.
As the last two cleared the door, three off duty nurses Elizabeth had requested came in and closed the door behind them. Knowing they might need a little help with transferring she had talked to the activities director on how to go about asking for volunteers from the nursing staff. Mrs. Dickson had told Elizabeth to leave finding extra help to her. She was glad to see them as she moved to thank them from coming in on their day off as well as explain what they would be doing. Elizabeth wanted to giggle as her eyes landed on the male nurse Agnes was trying to catch the eye of the last time they had class. After talking to them she went to the set Elliot had put up waiting to gain everyone's attention.
