My Day

I was jostled awake out of a deep sleep to the carriage stopping. Stretching my legs and arms real quick I blinked a couple times clearing my eyes. The carriage rocked a little before I heard footsteps coming around to the door. It opened revealing the man who drove looking just as tired as I.

"We have arrived ma'am." He yawned afterwards.

Taking the hand he offered to me I slowly climbed out stepping on the ground. I saw we were right in the center of Setauket the sun wasn't up yet but the sky was better lighter.

"Ma'am, tis be morning soon. Will you make it home safe?"

"Yes. I know the way from here, but let us go together as I do not wish for you to ride back in your state."

"Ma'am, I will be ok. I can always sleep in the carriage."

Nodding his head I watched as he climbed back up top before getting the horses to get moving. I watched him disappear around the corner into the night. Sighing I wrapped my arms around myself and began my walk back to the house. I saw a couple redcoats on the pier standing guard over the couple boats, one of them being the man that is now staying with Mary and Abe. Walking past quickly I decided to go to the Inn hoping to see Anna there and help her set up for the day.

"Miss!"

I stopped in my track sighing outloud.

"Miss! What tis you doing this late at night- or- um early this morning?"

It was the redcoat that stays with them.

"I just arrived from New York, but I cannot sleep. So I decided to take a little stroll to clear my head and hopefully make me sleepy."

Still coming closer he stopped right in front of me putting his gun over his shoulder.

"That tis fine, but one, such as yourself, should not be out by themselves. At least let me or another escort you until you decide to return home."

*Ohhhh, he is such a sweetheart, if only he wasn't a redcoat.*

Smiling I shook my head still remaining eye contact.

"No thank you, uuuummmm-"

"Mr. Baker ma'am, Ensign Baker."

Taking his hat off he bowed in front of me before standing up straight again, putting the hat back on and flashing me a smile.

"Yes, thank you Mr. Baker, but I will be just fine."

I turned to walk away, but he rushed in front of me again.

"I now see why our captain has an eye for you as your very head strong, but I must insist I at least walk with you until sunrise."

Sighing I was about to rebuttal, but I saw movement in my peripheral. Taking a peak quickly I saw Caleb climbing into the boat, so I moved my body so Baker's back was to the pier.

"Well since you insist, I shall take you up on your offer. Will it be alright as you were stationed at the pier?"

"Tis will be quite alright, as I do not wish for anything to happen to you. The major will understand."

Caleb was finally settled in the boat when Baker turned to yell at his companion. Turning around I forced another smile once he faced me extending his arm. Looping my arm around his and placing my hand on his arm we continued the walk.

"So, what made you depart from New York this early?"

My face dropped at that looking straight ahead.

"There was one too many insults thrown my way and I was not allowing such insults. So I made a quick and very poor decision to return here."

"Whatever were they saying?"
