“I knew you would be able to do it,” I say to him, still clapping.

He laughs, and for a moment, we find ourselves staring into each other’s eyes. His eyes are a dark mystery, the darkest shade of brown possible.

His arm appears around my waist.

I feel my face go crimson there and then.

“Congratulations, you are all officially initiates. Training begins tomorrow. Tour begins now. Follow me,” Max orders.

All of us give a small cheer, and we follow Max through the Dauntless compound.

-

First, Max shows us our room. All initiates (both boys and girls) are to sleep in the same room.

To be honest, I don’t really mind all too much, but many others seemed annoyed about that.

He then takes us to the Chasm, and then to an area of what he calls ‘the Pit’ and talks about initiation.

“Now, as some of you may know, we take the initiation process very seriously. There are three stages: the physical, the emotional, and the mental. Dauntless-born and transfers are trained together. You will all begin with physical combat, where you will learn how to fight and defend yourselves. All of you need to get changed into new outfits. They have already been laid out for you. Go get changed and make your way to the food area. Lights are out at midnight. Feel free to visit the Pit and explore the Dauntless compound before tomorrow. Off you go.”

-

You could say it can get awkward at times in our room.

Everyone has to get changed in front of each other. I guess that’s something we’ll have to get used to.

I turn around slightly and see that Tobias is removing his shirt. For the first time, I see his extremely muscular build, and find myself staring at him, maybe for too long.

Get a grip, just get your freaking outfit on and go to the food area.

After I get my new outfit on, I walk to the food area with Tobias. We both sit down at a random table with our trays and grab a burger.

“Hey there, Ava,” says Eliza, sitting with us.

“Hey, you feeling better?”

“Yeah, come on, I can’t shed tears in front of people in Dauntless. I’m just glad they don’t call us lot ‘Pansy Cake’ no more.” ‘Pansy Cake” is what the Dauntless used to call people from Amity, but it died out since they thought it sounded stupid.

“This is my friend, Tobias,” I say, introducing him to Eliza.

“Hello, I’m Eliza,” she says, shaking his hand.

“Tobias.”

“Abnegation?” she asks.

“I was Abnegation,” he says defensively. “Amity?”

“I was Amity,” she replies, doing an impression of his serious look when he said ‘Abnegation’.

We all burst out laughing.

That’s the first time I’ve laughed hard in a long time.
