After cleaning the entire training room and getting changed, Tobias begins walking to the food area with me, hand in hand.
Eric is standing outside the entrance.
“How sweet,” he says sarcastically, looking at our hands linked together.
“Do you have something to say? Because if you don’t, I wouldn’t waste your time. We don’t give a–”
“Spit it out,” Tobias says, interrupting me before anger overwhelms me.
“I heard you switched the fights around a little for tomorrow, which means I’ll be fighting you instead of having a rest day, Tobias. I was just wondering why,” Eric says slowly, looking me up and down as he says the last sentence.
Tobias’ arm wraps tightly around my waist, bringing me in closer to him.
“I didn’t want to fight Octavia because I love her. She means a lot to me. Now let us through or I’ll make you.”
He loves me? We’ve only known each other for a small amount of time…
“Fine, but let me just tell you that being in a fight with me was a mistake. You’ll wish you never got yourself in that position,” Eric whispers with a tone of threat in his voice, smirking.
What an idiot.
“Come on, Ava.” Tobias drags me into the food area.

While sitting next to Tobias and eating some of Dauntless’ chocolate cake (which is delicious), I notice that his face has appeared nothing but worried for the entire time.
“Hey,” I say while resting my hand on top of his. “Don’t let an asshole like Eric get to you. He’s just trying to get you agitated for the fight tomorrow. I know you’ll beat him. The bad guy always loses in the end.” I kiss his cheek.
“Thank you, Ava, but I’m more worried about you.”
“What?”
“The way he was looking at you when he talked to us earlier, it seemed a little… perverted. If he ever does anything to you, shout my name. You won’t always be by my side, that’s why. Hopefully nothing like it will ever happen again,” he explains.
“Oh,” is all I can reply. Now I’m worried, but I shouldn’t be, because I have somebody like Tobias who will protect me. It’ll be hard to forget what he said though.
It’ll be hard to forget that I may be at risk.
-
I sit down on my bed next to Tobias, his arm around my shoulder.
“Can I talk to you about something?” I ask him.
“Sure,” he replies.
“Well, when I did my aptitude test, the woman who was administrating my test acted really strange when I finished. She stayed silent for a while before telling me my result, and seemed to want me out of the room immediately. She looked… worried. Does this mean anything?” I whisper.
Tobias looks at me seriously.
“Ava, were you aware during the test?” he whispers with wide eyes. “Be honest, you can trust me.”
“Yeah, isn’t everyone?”
He stares at me in shock.
“Tobias?”
“Do you know what this means, Ava?” he says.
“No?” I say, beginning to get worried, really worried.
“You’re Divergent,” he whispers.
