“What the hell is Divergent?” I just about get out.

“Divergence is where you can’t be controlled… you’re special, but a threat to the faction system. Your mind works in different ways – the faction leaders… they’re terrified of Divergents’ abilities,” he whispers. “I know a lot about Divergence because my father used to tell me all about it. Yes, he abused me, but he was protecting me from getting found out. He said that if the person administrating my test asked if I was aware during the simulation, I should deny it. He said that Divergence can get you killed.”

I stare at him in shock.

I’m going to die. I’m going to die.

“W-were you aware?”

“Yes. We can’t get found out, Ava. Ever.”

I really don’t know what to say. I’ve just been told that I’m a danger to every faction leader. I’ve just been told that I’m a threat to the entire faction system itself.

I’ve just been told that Divergence can get you killed.

I stand up and walk across to the wall in front of me, still processing the information.

“I don’t want to die,” I whisper, trying to stop my eyes from going glassy. I stand against the wall and glace at him.

Tobias walks over to me and stands over me, his arms surrounding me, trapping me.

“You listen to me. I know this is hard to understand right now and a shock, but I’m not ever going to let anything happen to you. You mean everything to me.”

Suddenly, his mouth crashes against mine, and I forget all of the worries I have instantly.

His hands slide below my waist, and I feel heat rush to my face.

“I love you,” he whispers against my lips.

“I love you too.”

I’ve never said that to him before.

He goes back to kissing me.

I close my eyes, and lose myself in the moment, which I want to freeze right there and then.

Screams – it’s all I can hear outside.

I get up and sprint to see what’s happening.

When I get to the source of the screaming, I see Dauntless guards trying to push Eliza – the girl from Amity – into the chasm.

“Stop!” I shout, running towards them, preparing to fight them off.

Just when I get close to her, a fist comes towards me, hard, and I fall backwards onto the concrete.

Eliza loses grip of the guards and falls into the chasm. Her screams echo through my head. Tears make their way down my cheeks.

“We were just about to look for you, Octavia Pemberton. I guess you just saved us some time.”

One of the guards grabs my arm and pulls me towards the edge where Eliza was. I try my best to fight back.

Max walks into view. “Well, well, well, Ava. It really is a waste, but it has to be done.”

“What are you talking about?” I say whilst fighting the guards.

“Divergents are a threat to the system. They have to be destroyed. You know that.”

Tori, the woman who administered my test, walks up to Max.

“How could you tell them?!” I scream at her.

“It’s the rules. They didn’t want to kill you until they saw proof, the proof being caught on the security camera. Tobias is next.”

“Please, please, not Tobias, just kill me!” I yell.

“All Divergents are to be eliminated.” Max nods at the guards, signalling for them to push me off.

They push me hard and I lose my balance, falling towards the chasm.

Then I wake up in my room, and see all of the other initiates sleeping in their beds.

It was just a freaking dream.

Tears run down my face, and I cover my mouth with my hand so that nobody will hear me cry.
