October 2020

Silence filled the room as Namjoon and Mika absorbed what the doctor had just said. Mika sat back in her seat and began to laugh. Namjoon looked at her like she was insane as she started laughing louder.

"That can't be right. I have the implant. A new one was fitted 6 months ago." She said

"Implants are not 100% effective, there is still a very small chance of pregnancy with them. Do you remember the date of your last period?" The doctor asked

"Well, my periods aren't regular, so I don't really keep track, but I think it was 2 or 3 months ago, maybe longer. I don't know but that's normal for me on the implant." She said, "I am sure your test is wrong, I am not pregnant."

"Still, I would like to send you upstairs to our ultrasound wing the now to have a scan done. We can find out for sure and go from there if that sounds ok with you?" Dr Lee asked, looking at Mika apprehensively

Mika nodded. Namjoon still hadn't spoken as he was confused. Dr Lee gave them a bit of paper to take upstairs and said he would speak to them again afterwards. They walked out of his room as Mika continued to laugh. Namjoon was walking beside her silently.

"She is mental. Her test is clearly wrong." She said as they walked towards the lift

Mika was riding the denial train, laughing at the ridiculous idea that she was pregnant. She looked at him expecting him to be laughing with her but saw his jaw clenched instead. He did this when he was concentrating or annoyed, Mika feared it was the latter. She tugged his hand, which he still hadn't let go of and asked if he was ok as he looked at her.

"Joonie, what's wrong?" She asked getting scared at his lack of words, "You are scaring me a bit."

"Dr Lee said you are pregnant." He whispered to her as people were walking past

"I am not though. This scan will prove her wrong." She said rolling her eyes

"Baby," He said, "do you know how rare a false positive pregnancy test is?"

"Probably not as rare as getting pregnant while having an implant fitted." She snorted

The doctor must have called ahead as they were taken straight into an ultrasound suite as soon as they arrived at the reception desk. Mika laid on the table and pulled up her T-shirt so the sonographer could put the warm gel on. Namjoon stared at her bare tummy, imagining there could be a little baby in there. It made sense, the glowing, the sickness, not feeling hungry and tiredness. Not to mention the mood swings. Mika was rather on the dramatic side usually but her moods were more up and down than usual.

Namjoon knew she was in denial as she had a habit of going into denial mode as a defence and although false positives could happen, he was sure this wasn't one of them. However, he was too scared to let himself believe they could be having a baby either. He had wanted to be a dad for years, if he let himself believe what the doctor had told them and it wasn't true, he knew he would be heartbroken.

His hand still holding onto hers, he kissed it as he looked between her tummy and her face. She giggled as the scanner touched her. The sonographer apologised and said it was always a bit ticklish at first. She moved the scanner around and pressed a few buttons on the keyboard while she looked at the black screen.

Namjoons eyes were fixed on it as he saw lines moving around. Mika face was uninterested as glanced up at it waiting to hear there was nothing in there but suddenly a small bean shape appeared on the screen. As the scanner moved around more it got bigger and clearer.

"There we go." The sonographer smiled, "Say hello to your little baby."

Namjoon eyes went wide as he looked at the screen, he could make it out so clearly. The head, body, little arms and legs are moving around. He could even see the side profile of the babys face, the cute button nose and slightly pouty lips. He was awestruck. She pressed a button and suddenly a loud and fast whooshing noise came over the speakers. Mika just stared at the screen her mouth open, eyes wide as Namjoon gasped.
