I sat up, my eyes wide as images of my parents ran through my vision, before my eyes adjusted to the darkness. I sat for a minute, rubbing my temples before I sighed and pushed myself off of the single bed, walking into the kitchen and picking up a bottle of some sort of alcohol.
I sniffed it, and the stench reeked hrough my nose, making me cough and I set down the bottle, making a face at it through bleary eyes. I stepped over to the fridge and threw it open, looking for something to eat.
"Shit." I swore, groaning. "No more rations."
The door creaked open and I closed the damn thing before turning around to see Jacob.
"Well, bonus, I got ration cards for us, Kaleb."
"How'd you get them?" I asked as Hale came stumbling out of his bedroom.
"We dropped off a little package for some chick. Got us about a month's rations." Hale yawned, and I furrowed my eyebrows.
Why hadn't they told me?
"Then why did you take so long to get back?"
"I left this morning, had to get the pay." Jacob grinned, tossing the bag of ration cards on the table.
"If we're careful, we may get through two months without having to leave the walls-"
My phone rang, and I grabbed it, answering immediately.
"Hello?"
"Ah, Kaleb. It is you!"
"Marie?" I asked, clutching the phone tighter. I hadnt heard from her in months, and I assumed she'd gotten the virus and had been left ouside the Walls to die.
"She's alive?" mouthed Hale, all traces of tiredness now gone.
I nodded as she began to speak.
"I have a.... special request. I'll meet you at the usual place?"
"Outside?" I sighed.
"Of course, numbnuts." she laughed. "See you tomorrow evening."
The phone beeped, signaling she had hung up.
I slowly set the phone down, biting my lip and scowling.
"Damn it, I wanted two goddamn months of peace-!" I threw my hands in the air before sighing.
"Well, she said tomorrow evening. Best be there by noon. We'll leave an hour after curfew rises." I said.
--------
I got up quietly, making sure I had my ID and scan card for the security measures.
"You ready? It's been almost an hour." Hale said, coming into my room.
"Yeah, just let me get dressed, and I'll be ready. Go get Jacob, I wouldnt be surprised if he went back to sleep." I chuckled, and he did the same before shutting my door softly. I got up and walked over to the dresser, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. I picked up a dark red plaid shirt and pulled it on, rolling the sleeves up to my elbows and pulled on my dark denim vest with the hood, before pulling on a pair of dark jeans and hiking boots. I pulled my fingers through my slightly shaggy hair to try and neaten it a little, before stuffing my phone deep in my pocket, and my identity cards in another, before heading out to the kitchen, where Hale was waiting. Jacob came out of his room, his clothes slightly rumpled, but otherwise normal.
"Straighten yourself up, Jake. You look like you just fucked someone." I laughed, and Jake glared at me before pulling his shirt so it would straighten out.
