We fled after fighting through too many guards, running for our lives.
"Oh god, oh god.." I choked out, heaving to a stop in an alleyway. I crouched down, covering my face with my hands and letting out a choked sob.
"We need to move, Del." Kaleb said softly.
"We left him to die, Kaleb." I whispered.
"He wanted us to get to the resistance. We're going to do what he would've wanted."
"You should have just listened to me and gone home, then Jacob would still be alive and-"
Kaleb grabbed my arms.
"Jacob is in a better place, and we need to move. Where?" he asked.
I paused. "University of Utah." I said, taking shaky breaths.
"Come on. Lets get a move on, that shit's more'n a thousand miles away."
------------
~Fall~
------------
I ducked under a fallen tree, after Kaleb and Hale, following them as we trekked on, completely exhausted.
"We need to rest for the night," Kaleb said. "I'll take first watch."
"I'll take second." Hale volunteered before I could say anything.
"But I-"
"Just.... lets get ready for the night."
We all slept next to each other on the colder ground, still taking turns on watch.
---------
"Hale.." Kaleb shook Hale awake for his watch.
"Got it. Sleep, man." he said.
"Thanks."
I was near full awake by now, as Kaleb laid on my left as Hale got up on my right.
The nights were getting colder, and so we all used each other for body warmth.
---------
I sat up in the morning, stretching out, and cracking my neck from the stiffness.
"You both up?" Hale whispered to us.
"Yeah. Clear?" Kaleb groaned.
"Crystal." Hale said. "Lets get moving."
I stood up, pulling on my black jacket, shivering slightly. My hair had grown a lot now, and so now I could put it in a short ponytail. Hale's buzzcut had grown about half an inch, and Kaleb's messy hair was still short. Lucky bastard.
"Come on, we cant stop now."
------
We made it inside the gates to the campus of the university.
"There's footsteps here." I said, kneeling down and rubbing it with my finger.
"Not old, maybe a day or so."
I had taught myself to track as we had traveled, and I was pretty damn good at it.
"Lets follow 'em." Kaleb said, and we began to carefully follow them, getting stopped only once by a near dead Clicker spreading it's spores.
"I have a bad feeling about this.." I gulped as we snuck around.
"Shit. It's a blockoff."
"Looks abandoned..."
We approached it slowly, when I saw a laser aimed towards me.
"Wait!" I called.
"Who the hell is outside?" someone yelled.
"Stragglers, cant tell if they're Infected or not."
"Fucking hell." I muttered. "Are you the Resistance? We're looking for them."
Hale smacked my arm, giving me a reprimanding look.
"No. I was once a part of the Resistance. But I left it." A familiar voice called out. "Open the gates."
There stood a brunette with grey clothes and a rifle across her back.
I knew those eyes, those sharp green eyes.
"M-" I choked out.
"Who-"
"M-Mom?"
