9 ~Winter~

It's been two weeks, and it's colder than ever.

I don't know if we're going to survive this, but we're almost there.

I hope that once we get there, Joel can get patched up, and we can find a cure.

"Come on, we're nearly to the city." Hale ushered me on, pulling his gun. "We find shelter first, then take care of Joel."

"Okay, okay. C'mon Strider; lets move a little faster." I urged him on, and he whinnied quietly, and he sped up to a trot. I checked behind me several times to make sure Joel wasn't being shaken too much.

"Maybe here." I bent low on Strider as we went straight through the large doors of the mall.

"Let's stop somewhere with clothes. Mine stink."

"Maybe there's a generator." my eyes lit up, and Hale came up alongside me.

"Dont get too hopeful, alright?" he said, worried.

"Yeah, I know. But it doesn't hurt to think about it."

Hale cast a concerned glance at my ankle as we went along.

"I'm fine, Hale. I only twistd it a little, it barely hurts." I reassured, but he didn't heed it.

"Here. We can get in and out, and there are clothes for the both of us."

"Hey, the guy on the poster looks kind of like you." I grinned at the supermodel-type male.

"We look nothing alike! First, he is way more pale than me, and-"

"I'm trying to tell you you're hot, dumbass." I laughed, and he stopped for a second.

"Well I...." he stopped, which just made me laugh harder, having to bend over.

"Just go pick some clothes."

I spotted a rack of jeans, and smiled, going over and picking up several pairs, since I didn't know which size I was. I went over to the t-shirts, finding some nice simple ones and going to the dressing room signs when I saw something, and I grinned, biting my lip. It was a grey dress that faded to blue, and it wasn't too long. I grabbed it, and took it with me, even though I couldn't really use it now. I tried on all the jeans, finding two I really liked, which were soft and warm, and still stayed close to my legs so that I could tuck them into my boots. I winced every time I put much weight on my left ankle, it hurt a lot more than I had let on to Hale. I tried the t-shirts, taking three of them and stuffing them in my bag. I had plenty now, as I had wiped most of my rations and water, but I had some purification tablets. I smiled at the dress as I pulled it on, biting my lip at myself in the mirror. It was pretty simple, a crew-cut neck and those sleeves that stop mid shoulder. It clung to my body until the waist, where it flared out  slightly, the front part reaching mid-thigh on my bare legs. The back went down to my knees, and I loved it.

I took the rubber band out of my hair, putting it around my wrist.

"Happy birthday, me." I grinned. I was taking this dress.

I stuffed it in my bag after changing into my new jeans and a new t-shirt, grabbing a new coat off the racket, one with a denim vest attached to it and a hood. I grabbed a black beanie, pulling it over my slightly wavy hair, pushing it to the front of my shoulders. I made sure I had everything in my bag, and walked to the counter, before seeing a few bottles of perfume and cologne.

"Hale, look! We can either smell nice or super good!" I grinned, and he stepped out, wearing a black jacket over a red t-shirt which showed his toned muscles, making my face redden slightly.

I tossed one to him, and he sniffed it, shrugging.

"I'm using this one." I didnt use the flowery girly one, ew. I used one of the other "males only" ones, and hell I smelled amazing, I must say.

"Let's get going." he laughed, and I grinned, hopping back on Strider, our old clothes left discarded on the tiled floor of the shop.

We found a good, warm-ish place to stay. I could still hear the howling wind outside the mall.

"Jesus, it's still cold." I muttered, redressing Joel's wounds, making sure his heartbeat was steady.

"Good. Nothing's infected. All clean."

I walked to the mirror, staring at my tired eyes.

I hated this.

And I hated the fucking scientists who let this virus out in the first place.

"Hey, hey... please don't cry..." I turned to Hale, the tears already making their way down my face.

"I hate this.." I broke down then, and he held his arms out, and I moved to him, my fists clenching in his shirt. "Go... first- first Jacob... and now... now I'm afraid Joel is gonna die too.." I sobbed. "And I'm pretty sure Marie is dead too.."

He just held me as my tears ran out slowly.

[3rd person POV]

"Hunters." she said with fear in her eyes.

"I know. I'll lead them away from here, you stay with Joel." Hale said, but she grabbed his arm before could leave, looking down, biting her lip. Hale noticed all of these things, and more.

"What?" Hale whispered.

"I really, really want to do something."

"What exactly is that something?"

She bit her lip, before quickly pecking his cheek. "Now go." she pushed him slightly, and he left quickly, watching out for hunters.

—————

She had been guarding the door, Joel safe in the back closet, blocked.

Then it busted open. She grabbed the guy, stabbing his chest over and over.

But then she was grabbed, and she screamed.

"Let go of me, you chicken shit!" she kicked at him, but he dragged her away, keeping a tight hold around her.

"Hale!" she screamed.

Hale heard her scream his name, and began to run in her direction, shooting any man who dared come in between them. He shoved another into a bookcase, the man's head cracking on the corner.

He rushed towards the men, until pain bloomed across his left arm and he fell, yelling out.

He heard her call for him once more before the two were both hit over the head and dragged away, their packs left behind with Joel.
