Amy had turned up within 35-minutes, and her, Beca, and Stacie were in the building. Aubrey and Jessica stayed in the car watching the building. They wanted two sets of eyes that way they could check everywhere.
The girls headed to the back right corner of the bottom floor. Stacie had seen a door that was open which suggested that it was a stairwell to head upstairs. Walking slowly and carefully to not make a sound, the door was wide enough to see through and to walk through without actually having to move it. It was a bonus, especially as they didn't want to risk making a sound. Amy was the first one to go through, turning her head left and right, she put her right thumb up to say that the coast was clear.
They looked up at the stairwell. If you asked Beca in that moment, she didn't see 'just a few staircases' she saw at least fifty. It did mean that unless they wanted to get out on a specific floor, they could just head straight up. The downfall was that if they did run into trouble, it would be harder to escape. But if Chloe was here, then Beca was willing to take the risk.
Amy was the first, followed by Beca who was then followed by Stacie. Each looking around at the top, looking through the doors when they went past a sign for the next floor of the building, and another looking behind them just in case. But all they were really met with by the time they got to the fourth floor was silence of the building. They couldn't see what was happening outside as it was dark in the stairwell, but with the constant sounds of what was happening in the main city, it wasn't good. The only thing was as they got further up, the sounds echoed a lot more and what could've been a gunshot 10-minutes away sounded like it was in the same building. Which made it a lot harder. As they got to the floor where they saw something, they were even more cautious.
Aubrey and Jessica constantly looking in every direction of the old building in hope to see the girls, which they didn't. They didn't know that they were going up the stairwell. Neither of them had seen anything since the others had gone. Aubrey originally started to help her father out, but after a couple of years, she would just go off on her own as she was trained up in all guns for this. Jessica was trained however she just applied. Even though it's an awful night, it does pay an awful lot to keep an eye, mainly because you are putting yourself into risk, especially when you get out of the vehicle. It's one night a year for 12 hours but it's $2,000 to do it. A lot of people need the money and even though they are trained, some do not make it out alive.
Aubrey and Jessica have been partners for this for the last 2 years. They both work in the police force which is how they met. They became partners at work, and Jessica accidentally let slip, just to Aubrey, about her doing it. There was a rule in the police force, you couldn't say whether you were involved or not, they never understood why, you just couldn't discuss this night with anyone in the force. After that however, Aubrey and Jessica spent a lot more time together and then not only partners at work, but partners in the purge night.
Jessica looked behind her just to see if anything was happening behind them as they were mainly focusing on the building to the right, and she saw a hooded figure heading towards them, nudging Aubrey, and signalling her head behind them. She looked behind and watched this figure cross the road behind them. They didn't look like that they had anything on them. Just themselves, they definitely couldn't see a gun.
"They're not?" Jessica questioned in a whisper to Aubrey.
She replied with a shrug watching the person.
Beca, Stacie, and Amy were nearing the sixth floor, they'd not seen or heard anything within the building. Uncertain if anyone was actually in the building, but they needed to check, Beca needed to know. Considering they saw a figure, even though they couldn't determine if it was them or not, she needed to know. It's not like they could burst into the houses down the road asking questions.
Their plan was to walk up the stairs of the building carefully, and then head down via the ramps then they've checked the whole car park. The three still had another four floors to go up before they could head back down, and even then, they'd want to check the place properly, so if they did see another door, guaranteed that they would go through it. They've seen someone, the two in the car haven't seen anyone come out, so there is someone in there with them, it's just finding them.
Checking behind another door, Amy put her thumb in the air for an all clear. Looking around what she could see, there was definitely no one around. Indicating to head up another floor they moved on.
"They're going in." Jessica said.
"I know. I'm about to text Amy."
Grabbing Beca's arm, Stacie had stopped. She'd heard something, and it wasn't just the 'normal' noises that they'd been hearing all night either. Beca tapped Amy on her back and pointed her to Stacie. Miming the words of 'what's going on?' Stacie placed her free hand to her mouth and pointed downstairs.
"There was a door closing." She whispered quiet enough just for Amy to make out.
Amy's phone vibrated quietly.
From Aubrey: Someone's come in, be careful
Amy showed the message to the others.
Quietly Beca spoke. "Should we keep going up, or go down?"
