"We ask a lot of our patients. We put them to sleep. Cut them open. Poke around in their brain and guts with sharp instruments. We ask for their blind trust. Irony is, trust is hard for surgeons, because we're trained from day one that we can't trust anyone but ourselves. The only instincts you can count on are your own. The only skills you can count on are your own. Until one day, you leave the classroom and step into the O.R. You're surrounded by others, a team of others. A team that you have to rely on whether you trust them or not"
"and i listen for the voice in my head. nothin', i'll do this one myself"
Alex, Aurora, Jackson, Reed, Charles and Kate were making their way to the stairs for a big meeting. "Either of you two know what this big meeting is about?" Jackson asked them. "I heard there was a coup", Reed commented. "Webber's out, Shepherd's in. True?" Charles asked. "We know what you know", Aurora replied. "Bull, alright? Your brother's best friend's with the guy", Jackson said. "Expect me to believe you don't know what's going on?"
"Can you all go, and Kate can stay 'cause you're all pissing me off"
"Well, I also heard Shepherd plans to clean house", Charles said. "Maybe he'll start with you".
"That's cute. I'm safe, trust me. Like Jackson said, my brother's best friend's with the guy. You're the ones who should watch your backs"
"Why? What do you know?" Kate asked worriedly.
"Kate, I didn't mean-"
"It's simple math", Alex interrupted. "Shepherd hates the merger. You're from Mercy West. You're toast".
"Toast?!"
"Alex, stop, you're scaring her", Aurora said, smacking Alex's arm. "Derek's not gonna fire people just because they're from Mercy West. He's not like that. He's loyal and fair". "Yeah, tell that to Webber", Jackson remarked.
The doctors gathered at the stairs where Derek stood, ready to give his speech. "What is he wearing?" Callie questioned. "He looks good, chiefly", Owen commented. "He looks like an undertaker", Cristina said. Lucy and Aurora chuckled. "I promised him we'd clap", Arizona said. "Oh, now?" Lucy asked. Kelly joined the crowd and Mark stared at her. She caught his eye and glared at him before looking away. Mark sighed. Derek shuffled through some flashcards before clearing his throat. "I wanna thank you all for being here. I know you're busy, so I'll try to make this quick", he said. "As you may have heard, I have been appointed the new interim chief of surgery. It's my personal goal to make this transition as smooth as possible. I know we've had a rocky few months". "Here it comes", Alex remarked.
"Mistakes have been made"
"He's talking about the merger". Aurora shushed him.
"I intend to right those wrongs and..."
"Told ya"
"...bring this hospital back to its former glory"
"Former glory? Undertaker needs a speech writer", Cristina commented. Lucy chuckled. She caught Alex's eye and her smile faded, he looked away first. "We are screwed", Jackson said. "No, we're not", Kate reassured and Charles smiled. "Yes, you are, sucker", Alex said. "Check it out. Chief Webber", Reed pointed out. "And...", Derek began, but faltered when he saw Richard. "What I meant...by that is... What I'm trying to say is I wanna thank you for your support, in advance. That's all. Ok, let's get back to work". Arizona started clapping and slowly, everyone else did too. Aurora and Owen kissed and Teddy looked on in sadness. Mark approached Kelly who was on her phone. "Hey", he greeted. She didn't look up.
"Sloan was released from the hospital in LA. She's doing good"
She was silent.
"Is this some kind of joke? You're not even gonna look at me?"
